Valve springs, retainers, & seats
So I ordered all the stuff from TPIS. Super L98 cam for 87-94 hyd. Roller cam, the springs they suggest for cam, retainers, and seats. I have the stock 083 heads. Do I need to use the seats?
can I put on just the new retainers?
Or should I just use the stock oil caps and retainers?
cam can be used with 1.5 or 1.6 rockers. I have a set of 1.52 roller tips from another project I was going to use.
specs on cam
L/C 112
intake & exh @ .006 270.6
intake & exh @ .50 219.6
lift is .450 on int & exh
* spring specs
hyd. Roller valve spring 1.25 w/ damper
130lbs seat pressure @ 1.75 installed height
325lbs @ 1.200
coil bind 1.150
outside dia. 1.250
inside dia. .880
max lift .550
Im not an engine builder so some stuff throws me off. Just trying to learn and search when I get stuck.
Thanks

Re: Valve springs, retainers, & seats
Oh sorry, I thought you were asking about the springs.
I would not re-use the stock ANYTHING. Use the new 1.25" retainers and new keepers. Use the "positive" valve guide seals such as FelPro SS72527 on both int and exh. Don't bother with the O-ring or "umbrella" type "seals". Do away with the oil splash shields and "rotators". Shim the springs to get the 1.75" installed height" may take as much as .125" on the exh, maybe even more. Since your cam's lift is well under the springs' max, you can shim the installed height to slightly less - emphasis on SLIGHTLY - than the spec, to get a shade more seat pressure; maybe to as low as 1.73" but I wouldn't go any farther than that. The seats are really intended for aluminum heads, where the springs will eat into the casting; not as important for your cast-iron. Use them if they'll fit (probably won't) but if not just use shims.
