Makings birds go fast

How’s it going guys, my name is Jack and I’m the owner of a 1997 bird, a 1986 bird, and a 1979 bird. 5.7, 5.0, and 5.9 respectively. I’ve been working on cars for a while and firebirds have become my passion projects. I just got my 1986 this weekend and to my surprise it was the slowest bird I’ve ever driven.
I want to make it fast, but reliable. I’ve heard about the quickest ways to help make power is new exhaust, headers, and a chip. I’m using the smog pump, so no smog delete. The car has a few issues, but my main issue is slow acceleration and a very low idle in gear that almost stalls the vehicle. Looking for general advice for where to look there and then after it’s running like a top how to make it fast. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Please share your tips, forum links or just general “you’re dumb do this” statements.
Keep the birds on the streets and don’t let a bird die.

Also definitely interested in easy turbo mods or supercharges.

Can anybody please identify/explain the small tin squares with holes in them, shown in the center of the included image, that are often contained in intake manifold gasket sets?

Re: Makings birds go fast

It would help to reveal what the car is, exactly.

V8? if V8, carbed or TPI? What has already been done to it? (be aware, if any such, some of that may need to be UNdone) What transmission? I'm guessing it's a 305, or at least came that way.

Other person: the small metal restrictors are ... restrictors. The passage they restrict goes underneath the plenum underneath the carb and carries exhaust from the pass side over to the driver's side. There's a valve called EFE (Early Fuel Evaporation) in the exhaust where the Y-pipe bolts to the pass side manifold which is closed off by vacuum when the coolant temp is below 120° or something, which forces exhaust to take that path. They should generally be installed. They didn't used to be detachable like that, some deep smogger setup in the mid 70s must have wanted that part of the intake REAL hot, and they started coming that way instead of permanently part of the gasket ion around 1980 if memory serves, and now we're stuck with it.
