I got a low mile 350 from an 87 GTA that I am going to put in my 88 with a T5. I figured Id throw some new parts in it before I install it.

 

I don't know if you care, but that timing cover doesn't have the timing tab on it. That balancer's timing mark is at the 1:00 position. Not really compatible with your PS pump since that would be right directly in the way (that's why they moved it to 12:00). All of that means you wouldn't have a functional timing mark system unless you made one up yourself. A piece of muffler bracket and a timing tape for example. Not that it really matters all that much, but something to be aware of before you get a surprise.

 

See, that is why I ask these questions. I am used to LS based stuff and pretty much lost on SBC. I just looked at my current timing cover and I will probably just re-use it but I am not sure a double roller timing chain will fit behind it.
That balancer is the only one I can find besides a Dorman or something on the cheaper side. So I just need to find one with the timing mark at 12:00

I'll give you a hint:

The keyway is at EXACTLY 1:30. It is perfectly in line with the #1 crank throw, therefore is at EXACTLY 1:30 (45° to the driver's side, aka EXACTLY in line with the #1 cyl itself) when #1 is at TDC. Therefore you need a damper whose timing mark is a shade under 45° CCW from the keyway when viewed from the front.

Not that a timing mark really matters all that much; after all, the engine doesn't whup out "light" and inspect "mark" and "tab" to get the setting, then find "spec" in "book", and decide according to that, how it's going to run. All it care is when the spark occurs. It will run at its best if the spark occurs when IT wants it to, regardless of ANY of the rest of that. That mark is only for your own convenience.

Nothing wrong with a Dorman. For all any of us knows, that's who "Delco" gets theirs from, before they put it in a different box with those nice warm fuzzy letters on it and charge twice as much for it. I don't think "Delco" actually MAKES anything anymore except MAYBE spark plugs, and hasn't for a quarter century or more now. It's just a name on a box.

Well hell, ok. This motor sat on an engine stand in the garage corner for about 8-10 years so I was paranoid. I just pulled the valve covers and all looks great under those. I pulled the intake off and everything is super clean. A little rust in the water jackets. Pushrods all spin a little when you roll them in your fingers. No loose rockers. I guess I can just put fresh oil in her, prime it and run it.
