Smoking compressor box with hedders

I'm sure many of you have had the problem where headers wind up melting the black plastic compressor box on the passenger firewall side of car. I constantly get smoke as it's heated up. Have any of you found a good solution to stopping this?

Re: Smoking compressor box with hedders

I have a piece of miscellaneous exhaust heat shield jammed between my header and that box

I used some DEI heat tape on the lower portion of the evap case.

That's a great idea. I run AC in my car so that shield I covers the dryer as well. Basically helps keep the heat down on everything on the passenger side. Including the MSD box mounted to the passenger side strut tower

Totally forgot that my headers are also ceramic coated. Forgot because to me it is essential for headers to be coated. Kinda like bleeding brakes when you change brake pads. Just goes hand-in-hand.

I'm using coated hedders that are also wrapped but still to much heat for plastic that close

Re: Smoking compressor box with hedders

Stainless steel conducts only about 40% as much heat as typical carbon steel. IOW a bit over twice as much resistance to the passage of heat. Which is why I posted

Stainless headers w/ ceramic coating

Both of those factors - the material AND the coating - are significant.

I have the regular edelbrock TES headers. The heat was incredible. I ended up have them ceramic coated by Fireball. That alone made a big difference and they aren't stainless headers.

Re: Smoking compressor box with hedders

Yup, the coating is AWESOME in that regard.

I would equate - ROUGHLY - the difference that coating carbon-steel headers makes, to the difference that stainless makes over carbon steel.

The 2 together make headers a source of little more underhood heat than manifolds.

Had I only know that 25 years ago. I remember the manifolds being relatively cool. Those uncoated headers were a nuclear reactor. I can't believe my hood didn't discolour.

before I had coded headers that are wrapped I would be under the hood and add a gallon of my sweat to the engine regardless of what temperature it was outside lol
