Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
I've gotten the cruise control module all reconnected and it does work, but it works a bit too well! As soon as I turn the cruise control on it just absolutely floors the accelerator.
The service manual isn't too helpful with cruise control diagnostics, so I wanted to ask all of yall, is this a common issue? And if so, what causes it? I've replaced all the vacuum lines and they do work I believe without leaks.
I guess it could be the cruise control vent not working? Or a dead controller, or speed sensor? I am able to turn it off either by tapping the brake or by turning off the switch.
Which kind of cruise is it? Is it the box about the color of a carburetor, with 2 speedo cables going to it, that bolts to the driver's side strut tower?

There are two solenoid valves used to modulate the vacuum applied to the cruise servo. If the vent valve is somehow obstructed, plugged, or inoperable, the result can be that the servo will just constantly pull the throttle cable.
The system diagram should be similar to the Y-Body scheme, shown below:
Updated: Got it fixed by replacing the cruise control computer, located behind the upper passenger-side trim panel (next to the ECU). The part I used is "25110868"
Did your car start accelerating as soon as setting the cruise control system switch to on position, BEFORE trying to set a speed or did it start accelerating AFTER you pressed set or resume? My car is suddenly doing the latter. For me, just having the switch in the on position is no issue. It's when I either press in the set button on the tip or slide the Off-On-R/A slider switch right over to resume that the car begins to accelerate rapidly.

yep, that's what mine did. Floored it after trying to set a speed. You need to replace the computer. I replaced the module in the engine too, but it was probably unneccesary. If the vacuum stuff is pulling on the throttle successfully then it's not a diaphram problem, it's a computer problem
