416 head question
Recently discovered my 305 had two different heads on it. One is a 416 and one is a 450. So my question is both of those heads have the small valves 1.74/1.50. I wasn’t aware 416 heads ever came with smaller valves so did they make 416 with small valves? The heads I put on are 601 heads initially I thought it said 801 but cleaned them up and noticed it was 601. Plus side the bore is 3.776 so the block has been bored over 40. Cylinder walls smooth as glass so that was a nice surprise.

Re: 416 head question
416 all started out life with 1.84" intakes. So...
416 and 450 are quite a bit different. Somebody must have thought, well hell it's only a 305, nobody will be able to tell anyway. [mr_spock] Humans. [/mr_spock]

That’s scary because I used my micrometer on the 416/450 heads and both measures 1.74/1.5. Is it possible to install smaller valves in a head and why in the world go through the trouble lol. The 601 heads I installed measured 1.84/1.5 hopefully I see improvements in drivability. So much for selling the old heads for a few bucks they were basically scrap before, now they really are. The previous owner has me more and more confused about what they planned for this car. Lifters look just about brand new, block has been bored 40 over it has shallow dish pistons no idea manufacture. Should have checked the cam on it but this wasn’t a hp chasing project just a make it run better project.
