Cranks a few times but stops
Cranks a few times but stops
I have a 1985 Pontiac firebird and when I first got it it would crank a few times but then not crank the rest of the day so I thought it needed a new battery and starter I did that and put them in and it still cranked a couple times and then just stopped cranking and the car still has power. I’ve heard about the neutral safety switch but it’s confusing on why it would kick in after it’s already cranked over a couple times. The ignition is also all busted up I have to use a screw driver to even crank the car so maybe that’s the issue I’m not sure

Can you physically get your hand on the ignition switch rod and force it to crank ?
it could be a misadjusted ignition switch . A lock cylinder is cheap and easy to replace.
