Looking for.A rebuild example on an l98. I haveA ported intake manifold Is ported after market runners and plenum. Would like to be directed to your favorite thread on here. Looking for most power rebuild motor that isn't over kill for the ported tpi. Would like your opinion . Pefer a thread with dyno #s. I figure I can't go wrong with something that's tried and true. If I had a week, I could maybe just start to scratch the surface. In 2024, the ONLY reason to keep the TPI is because it's cool. -Which it is. I love the intake, and I'm hoping to do another TPI build here soon. Super cool. But average performance at best. Still, doesn't mean you can't have a fun, fast car. -it's just not fast by modern standards. Find yourself a shortblock. Find a modest cam, as too big and lopey will outrun the useable flow of the TPI. Find a decent head. I say decent because again, any high flowing performance heads will well outflow the intake. Not a huge problem except that they're expensive! Honestly, with today's prices, it's hard to justify spending the money on a TPI. A stock TPI is still fun. Used parts can be great if you're careful who ya buy from. Paying new prices.....ugh.....I mean I just couldn't justify new prices for TPI performance. I had a fully ported TPI manifold/plenum with SLP runners and a zz4 cam on a stock L98 longblock and it was a ton of fun! ....later went with a 383 and RHS heads, slightly bigger cam and the price paid wasn't close to worth it in my opinion. Still fun, and I learned a lot. Looked super cool, but......still was slow relatively speaking.

 

....for what it's worth, I'd rather have a stock L98 with a manual transmission than ANY engine with an automatic. ...food for though when you consider the cost differences.

 

I totally agree , I was going to keep the tpi for the retro factor, I was looking at a first tpi to keep the look but they seem to have stopped producing as they are supposedly "retooling" .
I am looking into building a 383 also. Figured I would copy a build that works well.

 

with all the new stock cars putting down so much hp I am well aware at of my limitations with tpi. But even without tpi limits there's always someone who can buy a much more expensive car that I can't afford. I'd be happy if could get her running high 12's in the quarter.

Manuals are fun but for actual performance I would rather have a ZF 8-spd automatic over pretty much any other transmission. They are plentiful, strong, do not eat a ton of power, shift far quicker than a manual ever could be and have been adapted just about any kind of engine now.

 

Well we each have our preference. Not arguing the performance of a modern automatic, or even a dual clutch, but for me it just kills the experience.

 

X2. We have these cars to DRIVE them....not have them "drive us". Drive it.

Fast shifting and "winning races" is a moot point anymore/anyway. We're not winning anything, no matter what transmission we chose so might as well make it FUN.

I agree that stock TPI is fun for what it is, but if I'm being honest it's an awesome truck intake and a built TPI motor is probably more appropriate for a monster truck than a street car. Torque is fun all the time though, so it does all depend on what you want.

 

I can't tell you how many times I've been told.Take off the Tpi You can make it so much faster. This car just isn't the car to do that with at this point I've owned it Over twenty seven years ,back in the day It had itsFair share of winning races But now a days it's Even cooler to have the Tpi.
Couple of years back my friend bought a 458 italia Ferrari We went to the track And a new Gtr Would beat him by a nose an the quarter every run. Don't get me wrong, We saw him on the highway on the Way home an showed the gtr what a supercar Could do. At this poiit i just want to rebuild the motor Throw heads and a cam in and stick with my ported Tpi Or at the most go to a first tpi. The time is past. The technology and speed is now. Unreal.

 

I'll be keeping the TPI on mine. It's just part of what makes a 3rd Gen a 3rd Gen IMO. I'm not trying to race anybody with mine, it's just a weekend cruiser. Put on some Depeche Mode or whatever and enjoy it for what it is.

 

For "winning" I got this a few weeks ago. Quite effective/$ spent... and ohhh... it has a 6 speed MT

Nice car.My friend just got a ss and put a custom cam in it. Went out this weekend and He got his doors blown off by a three series bmw twin turbo running meth mix. Hearing that even hurt my feelings 💔 lol

 

Hahaha!!! There is always someone faster than you!!! That's why there are "Classes" or "Categories", so you stand a chance... like any competitive sport.

 

I've got a hyper blue '16 SS with the 6 speed. ...I've had two 6th gens and they're the 2 most impressive cars I've ever owned. ....as for yours, absolutely gorgeous! Truth be told, I don't really like the "black" treatment of the 1LE, but on the white.....it really adds something. Absolutely LOVE a white 1LE!

I was never a fan of newer Camaros. But since I track my cars, I wanted an affordable track beast. Have to admit, it's growing on me now.

 

I was so put off by the 5th gen, the new 6th gen kinda showed up and I didn't even notice really. When I sold my '89 Iroc, I did it to experience other bucket list cars. I was shopping for a c5 Z06, and my wife actually found a red 6th gen SS and she said since all my camaros to that point had been red, that I should test drive it. I reluctantly did, and holy cow. It literally had me giggling out loud! .....didn't drive it much during covid and foolishly sold it. ....just got back into one this past February. Not letting this one go!
