Hi all,
Just double checking if the alignment of my rotor seems to be correct. The engine is in TDC. It seems that is aligning with valve cover corner and not exactly toward #1 spark plug.
It's not a mechanical requirement. It'll work anywhere as long as it's timed right. If you want to index it exactly pointing at #1, just lift the shaft a little, and rotate the entire assembly counter clockwise a little. Then put a socket on your crankshaft center bolt and hand crank the motor. You'll see the rotor turn. Once the oil pump shaft lines up the assembly will drop back down. If it's timed right now just mark the rotor tip location on the base below it before you pull up the shaft. You just need to lift it until it's free of the pump shaft.
The alignment at the instant that the spark occurs changes constantly as the spark timing changes, anyway. It's ALWAYS going to fire at some point counter-clockwise of TDC (i.e. "advanced"), and sometimes, ALOT CCW from there (like, 25° of dist rotation, which is halfway back to the cyl before).
Set the crank at your target static timing, which should probably be in the neighborhood of 12° BTDC, by rotating it in the CW direction. Make sure of course that it's on the #1 firing instance of #1 TDC, not the #1 TDC instance that's #1 exh stroke ending and int stroke beginning, and at the same time, #6 firing. The rotor should point just like it's pointing now at that spot. Pull up on the rotor and hold it rotated as far CCW as you can; while holding it like that, adjust the dist body to where the little starwheel teeth exactly align. Bolt it down tight enough to hold it securely butt just loose enough that you can still turn it.
