Misfire, detonation---NEED HELP

Lately, my car has been misfiring, and detonating, especially when cold. I have replaced the wires, rotor, cap, coil, ignition module, O2 sensor, the temp sensor on the manifold. I have a feeling that the problem is the ignition, because everytime I mess with the wires, it seems to run better afterwards, but then it goes back to running like crap after a few minutes. When I rev it, the tach will jump around when it decelerates, and If i try to keep it at 3500 steady the tach will jump around. I have no codes, but when i unplug the O2 sensor or the knock sensor, it does not turn the SES light on.

Any ideas wat is wrong??

I forgot to mention that the distributor has been making a lot of noise lately. I cleaned the plug wires, as two or three were dirty inside the boots, maybe that'll make a difference.

I'll check that out today, what should I look for? Also, the cleaning of the plug wires helped for a little bit then, it was back to running bad, I'll rev it and the tach jumps around it backfires(unburned fuel because of lack of spark)

Tonight I was driving it and the SES light came on. I was glad and thought maybe then I could get a code, but when I shut the car off and restarted it, the light was off. Dammit
