1987 Iroc coolant gauge refuses to work more then part time.

The gauge works every once in a while but just sits there most of the time. What can I do to make sure it is not the sensor? What else could it be? The fans come on and it isnt overheating but I want to have an idea of what I'm looking for before I go buying another gauge...Thanks.

Please help us! Most of the time, the needle doesn't even move from the bottom of the guage. On a rare occasion, it will show the temp. Do yall think it is the guage or the sensor? (I'm leaning towards the guage, but that's just my opinion.)

Pull the wire going to the temp sending unit and touch the wire to the engine block (or any ground) and see if the gauge needle moves. If it does, it's not the gauge.

Gauge reads 0 = wire disconnected

Gauge reads full scale = wire shorted to ground

Since yours reads 0 all the time, I'd take a look at the end of it, where the connector crimps on... I'd bet it's either broken right there, or the connector is fornicated, or like the other post said, the sender is just toast. Like he said if you short the wire to the block and the gauge goes to full scale, then the problem has to be the sender; if it doesn't, then check the wire very carefully.
