Setting ignition timing

On an 85 LG4, is it necessary to disconnect the computer's timing
advance wire to set base timing? I can't find any single brown wire with a connector anywhere near the distributor. Where should I be looking? Also, if setting the timing with it still connected is supposedly cancelled out by the computer, why does my motor run better with 10* advance set with the computer still hooked up as compared to 0*?

With a computer contolled carb.( think thats what yours has) you can just pull the four pin connector out of the HEI dist. W/ teh fuel injected cars, the timing connector is in the very back of the passenger side of the engine compartment in a wire loom. The loom runs over everything so its pretty visible.

Also, follow the instructions on the lables located on the front underside of the hood
