Open/Closed M/C solenoid, 02, TPS, idle, no start.
Open/Closed M/C solenoid, 02, TPS, idle, no start.
Lots of details..didn't know what the experts would need to help me
I've got a stock 87, only owned it a few months.
The first time I heard the car started, it had been sitting overnight, and the guy wasn't even up when I knocked on his door so I'm pretty sure he hadn't started it that day. He had the Mixture Control solenoid and either the Throttle Position Sensor or the Idle Speed Solenoid unplugged from the Quadrajet. It started great, the tach kicked up as high as 1500, and after he depressed the gas, the idle speed dropped to a smooth normal operation. The sensor that I can't distinguish is white or yellow where it is housed on the carbeurator, and the black connector that plugs in to it has a green rubber cushion around it.
Without these two items plugged into the CCC, the check engine light comes on as soon as the engine is started, (because there are no electronic pulses going back to the ECM, right?). The car starts fine and idles great, but if I depress the throttle completely, the car stumbles like it's just going to die, then accelerates rapidly. After I had the car warmed up the other day, I plugged the M/C solenoid and the other sensor back into the carb, started the car again and took off. I felt like the throttle response was firmer and when I depressed the pedal completely, there wasn't anymore hesitation!
Great. When I started the car the next morning, the idle was all over the place, jumping around here and there and I actually had to hold the accelerator just to keep the car from dieing. Once it warmed up, two things happened. First of all, the SES light came on after 1 1/2 miles, but the idle was back to normal operation and the car runs good again. I'm assuming that this is all because when the M/C solenoid is on, the ECM is running the carb too lean, but after the car warms up, the car is running closed loop, the 02 sensor controls the air/fuel mixture, and the M/C is disabled. I can't figure out what the other sensor is because I have two symptoms, one that says the throttle operates better with it plugged in, and the other that says the idle is terrible with it plugged in.. is it the TPS or part of the Idle Control Solenoid?
Anyway, THE CAR WONT START ! 24 hours and two starts after I plugged the ECM back into the carb, I had trouble starting the car. It did start once, but died immediately, and I haven't been able to get it to start since. My headlights are strong but I've tried to start the car probably 10 times (in two days) and every time it sounds like I'm getting less and less turn over.
I can't figure out why the car won't start- with or without the ECM plugged into the carb, I've tried both ways. Do I have a timing problem, a carb problem, or something I'm too young to see?
