New MAF but still getting code 33

My car was dieing whenever I let off the gas and I was getting 33 codes. I replaced my old maff sensor with the Wells su145, but I am still having problems. Now the car will idle but is inconsistant. It will start and then imediatly die. I have to give it gas to warm it up and ease it into an idle before I can take my foot of the gas. After driving for a while I get a service engine(33) and the engine will die when I come to a complete stop. It also dies, or wants to die, when going from park to reverse or any time it goes from high rpm to low. This problem gets dramatically worse in cold weather. I never die, or get service lights in good weather. (88 305 tpi automatic) Any help would be apriciated.

Replacing the MAF was probably a mistake. Dont worry though, seems like almost everyone does that.

Start by checking for vacuum leaks, then check the timing and TPS setting. If those are ok, replace the MAF power and burnoff relays.

I took the car into my parents mechanic and they are the ones who told me I needed a new maf. They wanted $400 so I did it myself. I am not experienced working on engines. I wouldn't know how to check for vaccume leaks, TPS, or timing. Do you think I should look at bringing it to a shop or figuring it out myself. Money is obviously a factor. Also, any idea why replacing the maff did cause some improvment, or why temp would be such a factor?

If your old maf hot wire was coated in crap due to a faulty burnoff relay, switching sensors would help. Unforunately the problem will return in a little while. Replace those two relays. To check for vacuum leaks, start the car and spray some carb cleaner around the throttle body and upper intake and see if your idle raises. If so, you found a leak.

Search around the boards for info on how to check your tps and timing, I know there are many many articles.

Actually the relays are pretty easy and cheap to replace, shouldnt cost more than $30 for the parts. They are both located on the firewall on the driver side of the car. If you get the new parts you should be able to figure out which ones to replace. There is a pic floating around here somewhere, maybe someone can post one for you.

Here's a pic for you on where the relays are located. Good luck.

IrocNaround,

I am not seeing the picture, just a box with a red x. Could you try again?
