LG4 timing question

Hey guys, I have a question. I set my base timing for my LG4 to 6 degrees BTDC (with the distributor connector disconnected, as the instructions say to do so.) Today I decided to play around a little, and advanced the base timing to 8 degrees BTDC. But I don't feel that much of a difference if any is even there--is the computer compensating for my advancing.. by retarding the timing the same amount? If so, what's the point in having a "base timing" anyway?

you might not of changed anything, as far as power output is concerened. the est advances the timing from the base setting.

If the est advances the timing from the base setting, and I advanced the base setting 2 degrees, wouldn't the est be advancing the system by the base timing plus the extra 2 degrees?
