Update on rear end

About a month ago I wrote a post about my rear end whining real badly. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ining+rear+end Well I somehow drove the thing 2 hours back to the shop and pulled the cover off and was very surprised. The spacers for the spider gears were all destroyed and had come apart. The oil that poured out was like silver metallic paint. the ring gear doesn't look like it has any unusual wear patterns but I'm going to replace the whole rear end. The differential was totally warped also...I'll try and get some pics of it. I am thinking about building a 12 bolt. A friend of mine knows of one I could buy. Anyone got suggestions as to what I should put in it?? thanks in advance.

your better off just fixing you stock rear end with proper parts. a 12 bolt would be a waste of money considering the power level your in.

Zippy don't you think I know that I'm going to be purchasing a supercharger soon as well as doing a major engine build up and so I will be needing a strong rear. I don't like doing things the cheap way. Anyone with suggestions as to what to get?

If you're into spending money, may want to look at the fabb'ed 9inch setups, real stout but pricy.

Head over to camaroz28.com, they usually have a group purchase on 9inch rear going on to save you some cash, occaisionally a 12bolt GP too.

well, as of right now, your far from needing a 12 bolt and even adding a supercharger your not stressing a well built 10 bolt that bad. if your looking though, slp, moser, and strange all make the 12 bolt application you could get specs from.

Zippy, how could I build the 10 bolt I currently have to be strong. I don't want this problem happening again. What carrier (limited slip), gears, bearings and what not would you recommend. Should I get braces?? thanks.

doing the basic easy stuff will get you into 11's with the 7 5/8 rear end with an automatic. i'd recomend using a detroit locker or hd torsen. other options would be an eaton or auburn pro diff. the eaton or auburn use spider gears which are what is prone to breakage so i'd recomend the first two. have the axle tubes welded to the housing with a solid bead. use a good brand gear such as a richmond or strange with a pair of strange or moser axles. these parts along with a rear end girdle and synthetic fluid should be no problem with normal use and maintanance. many guys are running this rear end with success as long as there isn't any excessive abuse and cut 1.6 60' time's with a rear end that's lighter and takes less power to turn than a 12 bolt. nothing against the 12 bolt as it is very strong, but unless you really need it, i'd recomend against it. it add's unsprung weight, more parasitic drag, and is plain more difficult to get parts for than the stock 10 bolt let alone the conversion costs with brakes and everything else.
