What engine do I have?

Are there any easy indicators to tell you if you have a 305 or a 350? Obviously if I can read the EIN I could find out, right? Would that also tell you what type of vehicle the engine came from? I have reason to believe that the engine in my car is not stock, and am trying to find out exactly what it is and where it might have come from (like year and type of vehicle or if crate etc)
TIA
James

The RPO codes in the armrest will tell you what engine the car came with, otherwise you will have to get the casting number off the block and/or heads and find out what car/truck they came in.

RPO codes=

L98=350 TPI
LB9=305 TPI

The Vin would tell you, as would the RPO's (if it is stock) If not, then the casting numbers.....

Engine codes: (8th digit of VIN):

Vin RPO Description
H = LG4 = 305 Q-jet?
7 = LU5 = 305
E = L03 = TBI 305
G = L69 = 305 HO
F = LB9 = TPI 305
8 = L98 = TPI 350
2 = LQ9 = 4 banger
1 = LC1 = 2.8 carb. V-6
S = LB8 = 2.8 MPFI V-6
T = LH0 = 3.1 MPFI V-6

What year is your car?

Flam,

If you suspect the engine is not original, check the casting and serial numbers on the engine case. The serial and design numbers are located in front of the right cylinder head, stamped into the deck surface:

The case cassting numbers are located on the rear ledge, to the left of the distributor boss:

Get those numbers and you'll have your answer.

then go here once you have the number...

http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

If the engine was made before 1980 then the oil dipstick will be on the drivers side
