Living in NJ, I wouldn't get a 160* stat until the weather gets a little warmer so you'll have warmer heat. You can get it at the local auto store.

I have never had a problem with heat, with my 160 stat, and I live in michigan, though a good compromise is the 180. That is what I run right now.

i'd go with the 160 t stat which you can buy at your local parts store, but only if your planning to bump your timing up some. i'd advance it 3 to 4 degrees over stock.

I thought I read somewhere that dropping your tstat rating like that can cause a problem with your ECM... is that related to the control of timing?

or was it just really late when I read that and this is a stupid question?

I would recommend going with the 160 stat if you're planning on running a Thermo chip with low temp stats. A low temp stat can play some nasty tricks on a stock chip.

with a 160 degree stat and the stock chip it pretty much made my car run in warmup mod ALL the time which was good in a way but killed gas at the same time. ran rough like when you first start it up but im not worried about that. if i go carb (i know i know but ive been toying with the idea and when i switch cams and heads this summer itll be much easier to tune) ill be running a 160 for sure since the ECM will no longer be in play id like to hit high 13s this summer all motor and maybe high 12s with alittle juice. well have to wait and see what happens i thought about switching motors but if i can hit 12's for less than 3k ill be happy plus it would be putting 5.0 mustangs to shame and they could use the old excuse "well its because you have a 350 you have 48 more cubic inches than me"

My car overheating :)

I'm actually having a problem with my car running too hot, as high as 220, even with the fan on. I know I'm losing a bit of coolant so that could definately be part of the problem, but I've got a recently installed 195* stat and even before I started having the cooling problem, the temp gauge would rocket up to about 220 before thinking about cooling off.

Does anyone know why lowering the tstat will affect your car so poorly?

I didn't plan on dropping to a 160* stat anyway, but I was hoping that I could go with something like a 180* without having any problems.

When you put in a 160 stat, sometimes the car will not go into closed loop operation, it will stay open. So your gas mileage will suffer, the stock computer will be trying to warm the car up.

Yeap. That happens to me. Time for a 180 this summer.
