Surface corrosion

I recently purchased an already machined 350 block from a guy who had the block sitting in is garage for about a year. The block is very clean except for a small amount of surface rust on the cylinder walls and a feww other areas. My question is, do I need to have the block hot tanked again? Or is there a way for me to clean the block at home with something none abrasive. I have soaked the block with WD40 already. Thanks DL

84,

What "other areas" are rusted? Soem disoloration rusting in the bores might not be a serious problem, and you can clean some of that out with oil and a ScothcBrite pad. If there is any crystalization and flaking, you'll need to clean with hot caustic and hone the bores at the least. If none of the other rusted areas are bearing seats, you might be O.K. Rust crystals can be very tough on new piston rings and skirts, adn rust particles in the oil can be very abrasive to other engine parts.

The corrosion was mainly in the bores, I took some liquid wrench, soaked the block then used the finest scotchbrite I could find. The rust came out no problem, there is a lil in a few other areas. None in the bearing at all. Thanks for your help. I will check for pitting. DL
