EGR and Exhaust Gas Source

I have an 89 Camaro RS, L03 TBI, and I was wondering where the EGR valve received it's exhaust gas from. I recently had the intake off, and I don't remember seeing any ports for the EGR, and the two holes in the manifold were clogged with carbon buildup, but like I said, they mated to metal on the cylinder head anyway and not matching ports.

If you all have any pics, I'd appreciate it.

With the intake off, you should have seen passages in the heads in this order: Water, two intake right next to each other, a cross-over passage in the middle, two intake right next to each other, and water. In the intake, the ports are in this order from the front: Water, two intake, cross-over, two intake, and the water blocked-off in the back. The water and cross-over passages are smaller than the intake ports. Take a look at the pictures of SBC heads in most any parts catalog, they typically show the intake side.

The center cross-over passage connects to one of the exhaust ports within the head. The EGR valve taps off of this cross-over port (also used to warm the plenum of the intake manifold so fuel doesn't pool when the engine is cold - actually the original purpose of the cross-over passage). It is extremely common for the EGR port to be plugged with carbon, especially if the engine burns oil or runs rich. I've even seen the passage in the head plugged up.

Thanks for the info 5.7. I still haven't found a good picture of the heads with the exhaust crossover. SDPC2000, AFR, Edelbrock and WP all show their heads without the crossover.
