Any power gains going to Manual Steering box?

I am thinking of going to a Manual Steering box in my Trans Am.
Anyone know how much power can be gained by going this route?
Is it worth it?

Thanks

unless it's a race car i don't think i'd do it. the power gain depends in part on how much power you have now

The standy power requirement for the steering on our cars is probably less than 1 HP. All the system does when there is no demand is circulate oil through the gearbox. Newer cars are even more efficient.

If you're trailering the car to the track or strip, and want to trim all the weight possible, it might be worth it. Otherwise, there are much better places to improve efficiency and power. For what you would spend on a replacement gearbox, the 1 HP net gain would be a very costly compared to other modifications, like a better exhaust system.

Zephyr, i'll concur with these guys. I did some back to back testing at the track in my old 85 w/ the PS belt off, and it made no consistent change in et/mph.
Like vader said, the PS pump is pretty efficient. When you're going in a straight line you're not putting any load on it really.
