New design Multec's?

Hi guys.
I’m new here, and probably won’t be posting a lot (different vehicle and engine. It’s a long story ) I was board surfing looking for information on Multec injectors and noticed that you seem to have had the most dealings with them. I know that the earlier versions had problems with the insulation on the coils deteriorating and causing shorts, and were considered junk.

What I’m trying to find out is, if the problem was ever fixed with the newer versions? If so what year did the redesign take place?
(They are used on the new Olds Bravada)

The reason I ask, is that MSD 50’s boast” Multec metering design” (ball/ seat, six hole orifice) and they are both made by Delphi, but I can get a better deal on the Multecs. I’m hoping the “problem” has been fixed.

I’m looking for “fact’s” not hearsay. Any links to info, first hand knowledge, specs, part #'s, etc, is appreciated

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

Welcome Aboard!

the Multec injectors have such a poor reputation that I would avoid them just because. If you still have questions about whether or not the problems were ever repaired, check at Cruizin' Performance. I'm sure Rich has some more experience with them than I do.

As for the "Multec design", that simply means the valving is patterned after the original Multecs. The Multec injectors used in PFI engines were very suspect, but I'm not certain about those used on TBI units. Again, Rich may have more data. But just as a hint, if they were made by Delphi Automotive (Rochester), they certainly aren't Multecs.

Update
For those that are interested:

"The design change was made in about 1992. The later design Multecs don't have the problems of the earlier design.
To my knowledge, all of the MSD's are the later design.

Paul,

Thanks for the links, and the update. The name "Multec" carried a stigma for many years that scared away anyone who had the typical "Multec" experience with the earlier units. The valve design was never really the issue, just the solenoids and flow control. Your contacts probably gave you the closest thing to "facts" as you'll get, since they likely have the most unbiased opinions. Until history generates some data on the durability of these injectors, we'll have to settle for the expert opinions.

I would presume, however, that GM/Delphi fuel systems would shy away from anything that was suspect, given their experience with warranty claims on the older design Multecs. We would hope that the issues were resolved and these units are now more reliable, especially if they are being installed in newer GM engines. Now if they could only work on the pricing....
