Ray Bohacz tells this guy with an L98 Corvette how to get his car into low 12s using Edelbrock aluminum heads with a bowl and valve job, mill them to achieve a 10.5-10.7:1 compression ratio. Use the 211/219 duration Accel Cam. Install cam 1-1.5degrees retarded. 2200rpm stall converter with a 2800-3000 rpm flash. Set initial timing 8 degrees BTDC, run 34-36 degrees of total advance through chip. The guy already has Accel runners and base, free mods, and exhaust mods...and a 3.07 rear gear.
What do you guys think?
Any other head that could get these times with evryhting else the same? Maybe Aluminum Corvette heads?

Maybe some other head, AFR or Dart or Brodix or whatever. Certainly not the Al L98 heads, that's what he took off and got rid of to get to that power level! I doubt he would have spent $1000 if he could have done it without.

Yeah, I saw that and qouted it to a few friends. I believe it, I've seen a lot of the Vette runs those times with that setup. And w/ a SR and LPE 219, they run even better. I'd go with AFR 190's.
Would using a ZZ4 short block in place of the L98 shortblock require anything different than what is mentioned in the article? Easier to get the high compression ratio?
I'm not too big on Edelbrock...so are high dollar heads like AFR or Brodix required to achieve those performance numbers? Is there a cheaper alternative...or is Edelbrock really the best way to go?

Make sure you understand the term "running in the 12's".
You can have an ET of 12.999, and you're "running in the 12's"

He says "low 12's", and I'm not sure... I think that compression ratio is a little high for the street. Dont forget the Corvette is a hundred pounds or so lighter than our cars. I've got the power to run 12's with the L98 heads, but not enough traction...

Oh. OK.
I was basing that on the second post he made, by just saying "worth 12's".
I guess that threw a wrench in my gears.
Sorry,
AJ
