AIR on emissions

Just wondering who has no air system but still goes through emmisions. When i first got the car, the air pipe to the cat was cut off so it didnt do anything and it still passed, so why not remove the whole dam thing huh?

Let me tell you this, by removing the AIR crap it REALLY cleans up the engine bay. I'm pulling off my heads, and manifolds and am taking it out. so I cut the AIR tubes off first, and I can reach all of the spark plugs now. I would do it if I were you!

if you have a smog check program where you live and part of it includes a visual check to ensure all components required are in place-you would fail. a good working a.i.r. system isnt that detrimental to the hpower output of a motor, anyhow. that cut downstream air will assist in keeping that converter of yours unplugged if you were to hook it up again.

Grumpy,
Are you saying that if you remove the A.I.R. from the car that the converter will clog? Even if it is in tune otherwise?

no sir, but the additional air is there to help the converter function by adding oxygen to support the oxidation process. eventually, over time, not having the additional o2 will cause the converter to loose efficiency and the potential to plug up will increase.

I asked this question on the exhaust boards with no replies, so I'll try again here since the topic has been brought up. Can I plumb the AIR pipe straight from the AIR pump to the cat so that I still get the extra air to the cat but I can also clean up the top part of the engine bay by getting rid of the air tubes going to the manifolds, and the AIR diverter valve. Everything I've read on the boards says that the AIR to the manifolds is only for initial warmup and then the valve diverts all the air to the cat anyway. Let me know what you guys think, logic leads me to believe this would work but my logic has been flawed before. I would really love to install non-AIR headers, that's why I ask this question.

BTW I do have emissions, but it is a sniffer test while on the dyno, no visual other than to ensure a cat is present.
