Engine noise at 2-2500 RPM

First off, i have an 87 IROC with the stock 305 TPI and auto trans. While accelerating in 2nd or 3rd gear when it reaches 2000-2500 RPM is starts making a tinging noise and seems to stop pulling. It under 1/4 to 1/2 throttle that it does it. Im new to working on cars so i don't want to make any kind of diagnosis because i really have no clue what it is. Thanks for any help.

From: previously OKINAWA JAPAN,georgia, now new england
Car: 1989 IROC--1989 T/A
Engine: 5.7 TPI in both
Transmission: W/C T-5 in both
Axle/Gears: B/W 3.27 in both
i would check base timing first.... Also look into putting in some good gas. Also does the temp of the motor seem to get high?
