Removing Emission Equipment
Removing Emission Equipment
Anybody have any tips on what can be eliminated fairly easy to clean up under the hood a bit. I don't have a cat and don't have to worry about passing emission tests.
Thanks, Bill

Air injection pump and it's peripherals would be the place to start. If you look on this site there are new belt lengths for serpentine if your car is so equipped. You will have to get some brass plugs for the exaust manifold, but one that AIR system is off you can get a lot more room to move around. Be careful because even if you are emission exempt as I am, most state inspection agents will NOT pass the vehicle if emission equipment is removed. I believe that EPA law mandates that it is a violation to remove any emission equipment if the vehicle is registered for highway use. I would like to take my AIR pump and that big box that goes along with it but my inspection guy says he cannot issue a sticker. Hell, here in Pennsylvania even if you are exempt from the tailpipe test they still look for all the normal emission crap. And they charge 20 bucks for the exemption sticker. I would check with your guy who does inspection to see what they will allow before ripping anything apart. Danno, 89IROC 5.7
Sorry for my ignorance but, I'm not familiar with the air injection pump. Do you mean get rid of the air conditioning?
No inspection required in Michigan for my sticker. At least none that I have ever heard of.

The air injection pump is on the lower passenger side front corner of the engine. It pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifolds and to the catalytic converter. If you look for some metal tubes going into your exhaust manifolds, that's what he's talking about. The tubes and the pump that feeds them can come out.

If you are going to remove AIR system, remember to save all old parts. Don't hack anything up, you never know when you will need it again. Also, when you plug the exhaust manifolds use an anti-sieze compound so as to facilitate easy removal if it becomes necessary. Might be a good time to consider a good set of headers.
