I dunno, Its possible. Friction=heat and everything eventualy melts. Ive left a few trails of smoldering tire marks before but I dont think any of them were actually on fire (no visible flame anyway).
For the non believers lol

This was at one of last year's shows. Mentally doesn't even describe it
The second last photo shows the flames on the ground....even thopugh at this point, most of the fire was put out.

GofasterFirebird,
Did you think I was kidding in my earlier post about "lighting them up" with a 305/2.77? https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=91818
Are you a believer now? Actually, tire fires aren't that uncommon.

Vader,
I didn't think you were kidding. I just saw no mention of you stating you caught your tires on fire or anyone actually achieving ignition temperature. All you stated was that idea and I wanted to know more so I posted a topic. I was a believer before I posted this b/c I believe to have caught freshly recoated asphault on fire myself. The oil in the asphault must have been the culprit.

Man, I love to tell war stories so here goes:
Summer of '85 and I have my pretty little '77 Camaro LT with 2bbl. 305. It sports a 2.73 open rear end as well. So, the folks are gone, my brother is in the house watching TV, and I'm just finishing up the washing of my car. I back the car with still-wet tires into the attached garage, and get a wild hair. So, I shift into drive, and stand on the gas and the brakes at the same time. The engine revs to 4500 RPM and I just hold it there, watching with glee as the speedometer hits 100. I let off the gas, shut it down, and walk into the house to tell my little brother about my exciting little powerbrake. At I hit the kitchen, my brother yells "HOLY ****!" and points outside, where a rectangular, garage door-sized plume of white smoke is billowing out of our garage.
We both run to the garage door, and open it to find ourselves enveloped in burning rubber smoke. I grab the fire extinguisher, and proceed to try to read how to use it
. By the time I figure out that you have to pull the pin to trigger it, the smoke already has begun to disperse. There, against the wall and floor of the garage is the hottest, messiest, stinkiest pile of blackened rubber I have ever seen.
Mike and I both marvel at the mess. However, the cleanup has only begun: As we walk back into the house (him to watch more TV, and me to get a bucket and brush), the mess only got worse: The gummyblackened tarlike rubber has stuck to our shoes, and we both have spread it across the new linoleum floor. Dang, it's like baby poop! I couldnt clean it off the floor with anything short of paint thinner!
Luckily the folks were gone for the reat of the day, because it took me that long to fix the mess I'd made.
Yeah, rubber catches on fire.

I have a video clip of a Nova that does a 2 min. burn and catches his slicks on fire. It is too big to attach, so if anyone knows how I can share it, let me know.

! I went to that site like 4 or 5 times a day. It had like thousands of pix and movies!!!
terrible loss It felt like someone died when I saw that error site no loger found. That video is bad @$$ though! I have seen some where they make the back to the future flame marks on the ground. You know the flaming tire marks.
>> Well if you email it to me at redbird_400@metalcorex.com I might be able to put a link up here so others can download it. I'll just create a Dir on my web host. Other wise I still have 500 videos from that site, hell I might even have it

>btw, yeah the will flame up. Think if you can rub two wooden sticks to gether and make fire you sure can spin a tire on the ground at 50MPH and make flames.

Yes, it can be done. Takes about 3 minutes of continuous burnout to do it with typical street radials. I watched a guy in a little Nissan pickup do it. Usually the tires disintegrates and blows before any fire happens, but not always. Seen it with my own two peepers.
