Ignition Timing Problem - Puzzled
Ignition Timing Problem - Puzzled
I'm looking to you for some advice on my problem, since I have no idea what is going on.
3 months ago, I did the intake gasket on my 91 RS 305 TBI. Started it up and ran fine for the most part. But if I would hit about 2 grand or so, and the whole ignition would cut out periodically. This be best described as firecrakers going off, sort of but not that fast. This wasn't a backfire, just the ignition would totally die and them come back 1/4 second later, and then cut out again. Problem went away as car became warm. So I figured since it was cold outside (where I was working) I'd tackle the problem in spring.
2 weeks ago, I got new ball joints, and shocks for the car. Was going to take the car to school, perform the work, and then align it. Well car started just fine, idled fine, and then just died. Checked for spark, no spark. I determind the ignition module was bad, and since one of the bolt holes on my distributor was stripped, I got a new distributor from a junk yard.
Somewhere along the lines, the timing got off. so I pull the number one plug, rotate the engine so that the number one cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. I moved the oil pump so that the rotor would fall into place pointing right at the number one cylinder, and put the cap on.
It runs, just really rough. I figure the timing must be off a bunch, so i let it warm up, disconnect the EST, and try to adjust the timing. But....... when I would get the engine set to base timing, it would just die. Anway, I moved the cap so that the engine would idle fairly decent, then checked timing, 25 degress advanced according to my light.
I've tried moving it a tooth each way thinking I'm off or something, but no go. It knocks and runs like hell if in gear or under any stress. Usually it will die after enough time.
Do you guys have any ideas what the problem could be?
Please let me know if I wasn't clear enough on anything.
Thank you TONS

Vader,
as the car became warm wouldn't a bad coil make the problem worse??? or are you talking about the pick-up coil???
ps. if your going away for the weekend could you leave you computer with your dog??? if you could that would be great...

I will check the resistance of the coil, but that doesn't seem like the problem. The engine seems like it is out of time, and runs like ****. But the timing will be set on dead 0, or maybe a degree advance, and won't run. Has to be like 20 degress advance, and runs like hell.
Thanks Guys
