Will a Compucam 2020 destroy my top-end?

Just wanted to see if anyone had opinions on Cranes CompuCam 2020. I'd like some more low-end grunt from my car and thought it looked to be a good choice. I just don't want to completely destroy my top-end though.

Thanks,
Matt

Sorry about that. It's an LG4 305 with a CC QJet. Everything in it is still stock right now.

I have a 2020 Roller cam in my car and it has a better low end than stock and pulls great to about 5500 RPM but I also added headers and did a port and polish on the stock heads at the same time.

Golden, you really need a ride in my car. Low end grunt - no problem!

Using the 2020 would be making the same mistake CHP Mag did on the My Generation Camaro - too little cam, too low stall speed. You get low-end grunt with higher stall & taller gears. The only issue with a bigger cam, as far as your top end goes, is springs - you'd want new springs with a 2020 anyway, so just get springs to match a higher lift! (Longer slot rockers another possible issue.)

In order to get all the benefits out of a larger cam (including the 2020), you'll need to the upgrade exhaust (and air cleaner, if you haven't done that yet). Do that first, then the cam.

Wait a minute, were you talking about "top end", as in valve train, or "top end", as in power band?

If the former, then the spring answer I gave above applies.

If the latter, even the 2020 will be better than the LG4 peanut, but it will be less of a gain than with say a 2040 or 2050.

Or a Comp Cams XE 250 or 256 cam. The Crane 2020 is just too small, hardly much of an improvement, as Five7kid says.

Don't go with anything smaller than the 2030 for absolute certain. You'll be wasting your time if you do. I ran the 2030 in my 86 305 TPI and liked it. (I re-used all the stock stuff except the lifters BTW, has worked fine for a couple years so far. Don't know what's different between the LG4s and LB9s spring wise etc, though). I ran that cam with very few other mods to start with also, was just fine. You will want some headers and junk down the road though.

Also, while your intake is off for the cam swap do yourself a favor and throw a Performer intake on there. Easy extra power, cheap and it'll work well with the new cam...

I'm kinda torn over whether or not the 2040 would be better though, didn't try it so I can't say for sure...

Well, at some point we'll know, since a friend is running the 2040 in his 86 305 TPI TA.
