help! i dont want to die!
the wierdest thing started just yesterdya. i always rev a little higher than usual when my car is cold, so i didn treally worry about a high idle, but then, i was going 55, and i took my foot off the accelerator and it just kept on going 55. then i tried to brake and i just kept on rolling because my motor was still trying to accelerate. when i parked it, my idle was around 2500 RPM!! i shut the car off, and turned it back on an hour later, and no prob. then, same thing happened again today!! i dont want to run into anything, so PLEASE help! also, i looked at my TB and it didn't look like anything was out of the ordinary around the unit or anything.
i had a vacuum leak through my thermac once and it doesnt act at all like it did when i had the leak. i dont know how to check for codes, but haven't had a SES light come on. i meant by that the TB is alright, that all the cables and all don't seem messed up. i thought maybe my throttle was stuck somehow, but it doesn't look like it. its wierd, though, because it doesn't start doing this until i am alreayd in gear and going, so i havent thrown it into drive while revving at 3 grand or anything. today, when it happened, i parked it and revved up to 4500 just real quick, and it took about 15 seconds for it to come back down to 2000. it dropped a little lower than 2K, so i shut it off for a little, then turned it back on and no prob at all.
Matt,
Check the throttle body shaft bushing for wear, and check the alignment of the throttle plates in the bores. A worn throttle shaft can cause binding and sticking in the throttle plates, holding the throttle open slightly.
You should also check the adjustment of the cruise control cable, transmission TV cable, and test the accellerator pedal cable for binding. One of the cables may be failing inside the housing and sticking. I'd fix this as soon as possible - obviously.

i think i cna rule out cruise, because it hasnt worked since i got the car 1 1/2 years ago, so i dont bother with it. could you send me a pic of the throttle body shaft bushing, by chance? im still a newbie and am not completely familiar with the TBI quite yet.

Make sure the damn floor mat isn't stuck under the gas pedal... that happened to me once; scared the hell outta me; something made me look down, the floormat was shoved way up under the gas pedal. Don't ask me how it kept the gas stuck down, but it did...
