no....the rims are originally painted black...i want to use sandpaper to remove it and eventually have a presentable finish. i was thinking of starting with 180 to 320 to wet 400 to 500 and so on.

I'd start with the 320 and move up from there for a smooth surface to paint. I'm assuming that it's just the paint that's in bad shape and not the rim itself?

I have been doing this for a few weeks now and here's what works for me. First clean the wheels with good soapy water to get all dirt ,oil and film off. Next blow dry them off good. You can use stripper to take off the old paint and any clear coat which may be on. If there is clear coat and you decide to sand it off it will take alot of work. DO NOT WET SAND. I started with 320 grit dry going around in a pattern, next 400 grit dry, stop and wash wheel again with good soapy water rinse and dry. Now 600 grit then 800 grit. Now I stop and clean with an aluminum cleaner bought at NAPA. Works great for deep cleaning.Spray it on wait 1 minute and hose it off.(wear gloves it is an acid) this will cause the wheel to turn a light milky color. Dry the wheel off and paint the painted areas.now final sand with 1000 grit the polished areas. Last step is to use never dull polish followed by mothers polish and rub it in . The more you polish the better it gets. Good luck

why not wet sand....i was told to do a 400 wet.

i plan on goin to 2000 grit....probably.

i dont plan on repainting, just polishing.
the rims are damaged themselves, so a very coarse grit will be needed at first i suppose.

thanks

here's what i did to my ta wheels. first i used roloc pads on my grinder to get the clearcoat off. then i hand sanded with 320, then 600, then 1000. all dry. after that i used a high speed buffing wheel on my die grinder to get this final look:

and this picture was taken inside a building. imagine what they look like in the sun!! sorry no pic of that.
