coolant conversions...chek it out!

Has anyone ever heard of putting "dexcool" (long life coolant) in there non-dexcooled car?

I've been thinking it over and can't see why lots of people wouldn't do it?! It's supposed to last a heck of alot longer, have better anti-corrsive chemaicals, and a bunch of other things as well. Can anyone perhaps enlighten the subject or correct me?

thanks, 87GTA57L

There is no reason not to. Just flush the system with water real
good before you put in the dexcool, it don't mix with the green
stuff at all.

I used it for a little while... it worked fine except that it leaked everywhere; it even seeped through paper gaskets like the one on the back of the water pump and the thermostat one. I had orange crusty stuff growing all over the place. I eventually put the green stuff back in.

I wont bother converting because I keep cracking open the engine each season to do this or that. Since I keep dumping the coolant out, I wont ever need to go five years.

Dexcool is neat stuff if you dont plan on doing any maintenance to your car for a while. However, if you are noodling around with valve lift, rocker arms, advancing your cam, etcetera, you will find that Dexcool drains into the dirty bucket just as fast as the green stuff, only costs twice as much.

Come to thing of it, I have noticed newer Chevy pickups having
a little orange crud around the water connections.

I never thought about this, but my heater core went after I changed it. I changed all of the hoses and paper gaskets at once, though.. so I guess I had no chance of those leaking.

I used to work for a GM dealer and all the techs there used to love that stuff. But they only loved it because it was CRAP and it just made them MONEY when the customers brought their vehicles in to solve the problems that it caused.

Works great for me...but make sure you flush ALL the green out-when they mix it's like clay. Another thing I've noticed with either is this 50/50 mix doesn't work as good as they say any more. I had to mix 75(antifreeze)/25 to get a -34deg freezing point...make sure you actually check this. The dexcool is much better for aluminum(corrosion), that's why so many new cars need it. As far as it causing problems...I haven't had any or seen any but time will tell.
