Car almost dies at WOT..please help quick!!

... Ok i was coming home from school today and when i stepped on it the car didn't accelerate at all but began shaking back and forth, w/ the tach jumping all over. I let off the accelerator until it stopped and then gently eased the accelerator and managed to get the car home (stalled a few times when i had to stop..)

I looked the car over and noticed that the gas cap wasn't on properly and there had been some gas that spilled over.... I put the cap on properly, started her up again, ran her around the block w/ the same damn problems. The car will run fine w/ normal accelerating, but when i get on it a little bit more (around 3/4 throttle) it'll shake

Just an idea, but could air have gotten sucked into the gas tank, so when i go WOT it gets fuel starvation??? Anyone know what the hell else this could be??

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the car ran fine before i filled it up last night

Is it carbed? If it is then it is a possibility that there is some trash in it. Sometimes you get some dirty gas at the pumps...

no its TBI.... im changing the fuel filter tomorrow too.

The damn thing did it again on the way home from work (stalled when i was turning on a main road ) I'd be cruising at around 50mph and the thing would just start shaking, and i did notice popping from underneath the car... so I'm thinking that it could be engine misfire?? I'll be checking out the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor tomorrow to see if its anything

but in the mean time, anybody else have any suggestions??

TIA

Your catalytic converter could be clogged. You should be able to see it glow red after driving if it's clogged that bad.

Sounds like detonation. Dont understand how that would be caused just by filling up the tank though.

If it doesn't have detonation it wouldn't even run. Premature detonation would cause an audible pinging and would cause the engine to shake. The engine is shaking do to a miss caused by ??? ... I still think the cat is to blame though!

thats another thing i was thinking, but last night after i got home from work i took a peek under the car and all looked normal.... then again it was only a 3 mile drive. I'll see if i can get the cat off to look at it and see whats goin on because the shaking doesnt happen every time i go WOT - theres the occasional few times when it takes off like normal, making me thing everything is fine and dandy, then the b*tch shakes again

Thanks again everyone for all the help, i appreciate it

If it's intermittent it might be an ignition issue. Cap/Rotor/Wires/Plugs would be some areas to check. Also the pickup coil in the distributer could be throwing fits. It's a cheap part, but the distrubuter needs to be removed and disassembled.

Could it be a possible vacuum leak?
