Got the Ford 9

Ford 9 axle housing arrived today, got it threw the barter system. 41" flange to flange, now have to figure how to mount it in 87 Camaro, spring perches, shocks, etc. Not a 4 link but got the complete SSM kit. Lift bars, crossmember and connectors. Anyone ever "tubbed" a f-body? will have to open up the lift bars to fit this big axle. What the hell have I gotten into...lol

never did it, but always wanted to. i'd build a jig around the 10 bolt, get some referance measurements, then cut all the brackets and hangers off the 10 bolt and transfer to the ford rear.

I put a 9" under my car over the winter. Moving all the brackets wasn't that hard. Measure at least 3 times before cutting off the old brackets. I didn't have to worry about a torque arm mount since I went with ladders bars. The ladder bar mounts needed to be enlarged to fit over the 9" tube.

I'm using a big bearing housing with ford backing plates and brakes. I ordered some aftermarket 31 spline axles with ford bolt pattern. My rims have dual bolt pattern so they bolt right up.

I picked up a center section locally with 4.56 gears and a spool.

Full tubbing a third gen is a big job. You're best to take it to someone who knows what they're doing. It's not a job for a backyard mechanic. Mini-tubbing is almost impossible. The "frame" is already too wide. The only area that can be sectioned is removing the bump stop and cutting a bit at the front of the wheel well for larger tires. You can't actually make the wheel tub any wider than it already is without completely backhalving the car.

Thanks for the replies
Hmmm.... what all is involved in backhalving the car. It's a project and in no hurry to complete it, just want to make sure everything is done right.

There are some pics on the web somewhere of a backhalf of a 4th gen. Cut out the entire floor and subframe behind the driver seat to the rear of the car. Weld in a new subframe. Recover the floor with new sheetmetal and tubs. Not an easy job.
