EGR and exhaust question need help
Okay guys. I didn't get alot of feedback on my code 32 i had posted over the weekend. But anyways i want to ask a few more questions into investigating this infamous code 32. First is i do have a 3inch borla exhaust which i believe the muffler is straight through with some packing to deaden the sound. I think i have read a few posts in which the low restriction exhaust would not allow enough exhaust backpressure to operate the egr valve. Also i had a code 42 along with the code 32. Could the other code have tripped code32? Anyways i have fixed the code 42 but yet to check if that darn 32 code will come back again. I'm thinking with the low restriction exhaust it will certainly come back. I've heard of getting a prom chip fixed so it will ignore the egr diagnostic. Would that help out? I live in california so i have to smog my car and was concerned it might not pass smog. I would really like to fix the egr without going to great lengths to fix it. I really do enjoy the Borla exhaust looks pretty tight on the car but if its going to give me problems then i will have to find another exhaust that will give me back some backpressure. My car is a 91z28 1LE 5.7 auto with speed density. Does anyone know if these speed density cars came with a egr temp switch? I heard that the map sensor senses the change in vacuum and tells the ecm about egr function or something like that. I'm also thinking about putting headers on too which will probably add even less restriction flow. I know that the code will set on the car but when you restart it usually will go away only when you check the codes its in the computer but the ecm doesn't go into limp home mode. I think its okay to drive like that. Man i really hate this code 32. anyone know a permanent fix for this thing? Thanks if anyone of you guys can help out.
I did not read your last post about what you have tried. But I wanted to say that I run headers with no cats and no mufflers, just dual pipes out the back. I have had no EGR problems.
Hope this helps you a little

Blue,
The less restrictive exhaust will not set off a code. The EGR valve you have is not a pressurized valve but instead a solenoid controlled. If you look at the EGR valve and see a small sensor screwed into the base, that's the Diagnostic Switch.
I just recently put on a 3" Flowmaster in my GTA and coincidently got a code 32 the day after. I like you thought the exhaust was causing the problem. So I replaced the old factory EGR valve and Diagnostic Switch and have not seen that code again.
When I pulled the switch, the thermocouple which screws inside the switch housing was loose. Anyways the cost of replacement was $85 for both at the dealer, plus a couple of hours of labor of my own.
