Please help..... : (
Hey guys,
I have a 90 RS w/ a v-6 (2.8 liter??) and I'm getting like 6miles per gallon. I've gotten about this since I bought the car. ( about 6 months ago) I, unfourtunately, took the guys word for it that sold me the car that he got about 24 mpg on the highway.....and about 19 around town. I took the car about two months ago and had a complete tune-up done. Plugs, wires, fluids, air-filter, etc....
The car shows 142k miles on it now..... The guy I bought it from said the engine only had 76k. The mech. I took it too said from the way the car drove and ran that he would be more inclined to believe that it had 76k then 142, And, being the inexperienced teen that I am....I didn't ask for paperwork. Anyway.....in the last 6 months I've replaced the alternator, water pump, and the tensioner (idle pulley??) The air-pump just went out about 2 weeks ago. My mech. said that it's not necessary to have on the car. So, I bought a shorter belt and re-routed it around it excluding the pump. Since then, I've been told that it will burn my engine out....is this true??? Would a rebuild be a good idea? How much life will that add to the car?? What would you guys do in my situation?? I thought I had gotten a good price on the car.... I bought it knowing it needed some body work (yes....another mistake....I know now, wrecked cars are bad) for about $3,000 I think I can have the engine rebuilt and have all of the body work done.... Is this worth it on a v-6?? What gas milage would I get if I rebuilt the engine??? Any advice or comments would greatly help. I'm about ready to burn this one and buy another car.....so all suggestions are welcome. Maybe I should scrap it???? Thanks

You could search our V6 Forum, you might find a bunch of answers there already. In the upper right corner of this screen, click on "Search", type in "mileage", and choose the V6 forum.
Your engine will be fine with the smog belt unhooked- as long as you don't go through an emissions which requires under-the-hood inspection.
Your poor gas mileage is probably due to a poor running condition. Search the V6 area for "major tuneup". Run my list against the receipt from the shop you went do, and see how "complete" their complete tuneup was.
Oh, and your V6 is the 3.1 (189 cubic inches).

Also, you may want to check to see if the odometer is reading each mile accurately. Go to a highway with mile markers and time how long it takes to go a mile at 60mph. It should take 60 seconds.

Before you do this, be sure your speedo is accurate, an inaccurate one will mess up your milage as well.
