The End of a tradition
Fellow TGO members not the usual post. After reading all the differing points of view about anything from thermostats to fuel pumps I got a new one for you. I am posting this to add a little levity to the forum. As I have stated many times before I am the old guy on the site. My oldest daughter turned 18 and of course she got her first CHEVY. It's a 99 Cavalier with a four cyl. engine. As one would expect she is thrilled, but here is the the 10 thousand dollar question. I have got a friend who has a 77 'Vette with 28k original miles and he has GOT to sell it. Hmm, I said let's get rid of the Cavalier and I will give my daughter the 89IROC with 59k original miles, and I will buy the Corvette. Guess what, my firstborn does not want the Camaro. I read a post about a month ago by MRS.Lottaballs and she was trying to figure what brought about the demise of the Firebird and Camaro. Got one answer, anyone watch that stupid movie "Fast and Furious"? They have a lot of little pisspots running around making a lot of noise, but I laughed my *** off watching it. Give ME a third-gen with 10 grand invested in the motor and will wipe the *** of any Honda. Our kids have been told that American cars are not to be desired, but as I pointed out to my daughter that the reason that a Cavalier weighs 300 pounds more that a Honda is that the Honda is bascially a piece of junk. My niece took my brother in laws Honda out two days after she got her licence and ran into a curb at about 35 MPH. You should have seenthat piece of ****. I am VERY grateful to have a group that is so dedicated to the preservation of our heritage. Despite the heated discussions, we have to keep the memory alive. TGO members, I thought that would make more than a few people get a laugh, nothing more. Danno

Man, I know my GF would dump that Cavalier for your IROC in a heartbeat, then again she'd dump the IROC for the Vette as well.
You know what, you're the Dad, I would make her get rid of the Cavalier so you could get the Vette, may not be the fairest, but hey, you gotta have you're fun too, she'll have chances later in life to get her dream car, and I guarantee she won't miss the Cavalier.

Let her drive the Iroc, and drive it with some spirit. I can name quite a few people I know that brag up their honda, nissan, or what every little econobox car--they say, it's quick and handles really good. I tell them lets go for a ride in my old 82. 10 minutes later they have a different point of view--not that they will go out and buy a camaro, but it makes them think. I get way more compliments now than 6 years ago, and my car looks the same--nice looking third-gens are becoming less common all the time.
I wish my dad wanted to give me his camaro. I just need to convice him he needs the chevelle he wants. Of course, me being 17 with 460 cubic inches would be disaster. I just dont have the skill to handle it yet. Thats the other thing to worry about, is can she handle the power in the rain? I know I had trouble with my 2.8 camaro first learning to drive in the rain, and I can bet money I wouldve totalled a car had I anything but the 2.8 to start with. Before you can drive those you need to know how to correct a fishtail. Its bound to happen sometime.

So you'd ditch your iroc for a 77 vette? Even with low miles i think i'd keep the iroc for myself. Vettes in that era left alot to be desired. My opinion i guess.

Because I drive an 87 IROC, I got my 17 year old son a 80 Ford F-100 loaded with an in-line six, three speed manual (300+K miles). Good tires and brakes...
He still managed to get a speeding ticket for 85 in a 55 mph zone. He also took an island head on blowing three tires and bending three rims. Glad I didn't get him an F-body.
I tried!

Actually I ran him for a T-bone at a local steak house. It was so pathetic he was crying over his cocktail. You are on the right track though, would be a REAL nice project. I smell a ZZ4 down the road.

If you love your daughter, I'd suggest keeping the Cavalier for her. Now if you want the Vette--go ahead.
My 84 Z28 was originally purchased by the previous owner for his 16 year old daughter.
She didn't want it. She wanted a Ford Ranger instead. I mentioned to the guy that this might not be the best car for a young driver....he said, No, she's save and careful. One week later she totaled the Ranger. If she'd been driving as fast as she could go in the Z, she very well might be dead!
My point about a Honda is .....so what if it can go fast, you're driving a Honda! Sounds like crap, is cramped, doesn't handle well and....it's a Honda.
The first car I learned to drive was a Honda. It was a great car for what it was intended to do....be reliable and get good gas mileage.
Anyhow, back to your daughter.....mine are too young to drive yet, however, I think I'd just let them have something slow and safe!

Give up and let her keep the Cavalier. Like Click & Clack tell the women, "Don't listen to your dad about cars."
I'll agree with a few of these guys, let her keep the 4 cylinder cavalier, at least it's a chevy. It is definitely more safe than the iroc anyway, and you wouldn't want to see her get into fender-benders and open her door into the gas pump with your baby, would you?

Yeah, you are ALL right. See I am so SPOILED, I want the best of both worlds.
It's times like this I wish I could print money. I could disconnect the EST connector, just a thought. Thanks all around for the feedback. Took me 3 years to find the ROCK, and I do not think I'll ever give it up. Gotta work on MOMMA some more, I think she will cave in and give up that cruise. TNX, Danno

she should keep the cavalier. people need to stop blaming the fast and furious **** for the younger croud making up their mind on what they like. she probably likes the smaller cars as most women do and being a mechanic i'll say that the honda is better built than the cavailier. what happens to a car when you hit something isn't as importan as what happens to the person/people in the car. they are designed to fold up easy to take the impact. i would expect a response like this from someone who seems to feel the 77 vette would be better than an 89 iroc. i've been in some fast foriegn cars and fast american cars. worked on both too, i'd rather have a ford or chevy, but i feel anyone willing to modify their car for something other than looks should get some credit whether it be a yugo, honda, or chevy. 10 grand in a talon vs. 10 grand in a camaro would probably get you a faster camaro, but that wouldn't make the talon a slug by any means. if your going to pick on the foriegn crowd than pick on what's in the camaro's class like the 300gtvr4, rx7, nsx, 300zx, etc. to take shots at civic's and such, you'd better be comparing them to cavailiers, lumina's, impala's, monte carlo's, malibu's, etc. the daughter that probably don't car about speed is probably right to not want a 10 year older car, she want's what is easier for her to drive.

Now is a Cavalier REALLY safer than the IROC? I dont think so. If I were to get into an accident, and had the choice of bing in a Cavalier or an IROC, I would take the IROC in a second. Why? Its Stronger, heavier, and MUCH harder to flip. New cars today are built like crap, too much plastic and junk to save weight and money. If your really worried about her speeding, put a rev limiter in there! Think about it... a rev limiter would do wonders. Set it to maybe 4k. Just an idea though...

Hey, kids will like what kids like. I know there are things I appreciate that the generation older than me does NOT. A lot of "old school" motorheads don't really appreciate my "new" thirdgen camaro. It's not built like they used to be built.....
I understand their point and agree with them. It's not like they old ones. And while I'd love to have a 1st gen....I think I'd still prefer to ride around in my 84 Z everyday.
Why is that? Because it's more comfortable, handles better and that's the car I grew up coveting (too strong of a word..but you get the idea.)
I saw the older cars, but when they came out with those and I saw some driving around town...I was hooked.
It's probably very similiar to the highschool kids now. Many of them see "tricked out" imports with the blue lights, giant spoiler and fat ole' fart pipe on there and think it's neat. And, well, what ever blows your skirt up I guess.
It's just a different cliche, that's all. Like truck people, low riders, sports cars and now imports. Oh, don't forget the VW people. Those can be great!

Drop a long rod 406 in your 77 vette, trust me, I love mine, currently in the low to mid 12's in the quarter. BTW I also thought Fast and Furious was hysterical, the guys I work with at the shop and I were laughing our butts off, really annoying all the kids in the theater. We still throw quotes from the movie around when we here someone who doesn't know what the h*ll they're talking about.

Not true. I'm 17, my 84 Z28 is my first car and I have no intentions on getting rid of it any time soon. At school even people with riced-out Hondas like and respect Camaros. It's just that:
1. they cost too much for a kid that has to buy his own car, and a lot of kids want new cars...not thirdgens. Even though many kids love the old restored Camaros (even my third gen). Sop I cant figure that out.
2. GM makes it as hard as humanly possible for a kid to buy a new Camaro
3. Parents that buy the kids car dont want them to get in trouble and a Camaro/TA with 300+ hp will do just that a 120hp Honda will not

Danno, I'm not the oldest, youngest or wisest member of TGO but you need to ask your daughter.
She could probably handle the I-ROC with no problems and its a great car I'm sure but does she want it? She may not be a fbody kinda girl. I know my cousin loves her 89 camaro, my uncle offered her another newer car and she passed on it. (Chicks in Fbodys RULE! :rockon
As for the Vett I'm unsure, I would probably go for it if I was in your situation although I cant even fit in one (too damn tall).
If you want it get it, store the IROC or sell her to someone that will give her a good home. You just need to look inside and see.
