Parts needed for T5 Swap
Okay Im going to the junk yard tomorrow to get a T5 to replace my dead 700R4. I am trying to gather a list of parts needed for the swap. Heres what I know I will need:
T5 Transmission
T5 Shifter Assembly
Manual Console Plate
T5 Bellhousing
Clutch Pedal Assembly
Clutch Master Cylinder
Clutch Slave Cylinder
Hydraulic Line
But Heres where it gets a little confusing:
I dont intend for this transmission to last very long, maybe 6 months until i can afford a 6 speed. So I dont have a problem with using a used pressure plate/clutch disc.
I have been trying to figure out what flywheel to use, however. Is it possible to use a stock T5 flywheel and just get it counterweighted? I know I will need an early model flywheel for a 2 piece rear main seal engine. Summit sells a counterweight which sndwiches between the crankshaft and flexplate (auto) which says it is for use with a stock 350 flexplate on a 383 stroker. Could I use this between the T5 flywheel instead of getting the flywheel weighted?
Could someone list all the parts I will need? I havent worked on too many manual trannys.

The only thing i'd add to that list would be all the related bolts and such. You might have to modify the wiring harness as well. Swapping to a manual tranny is a PITA. I'd wait to get the 6 speed and do it once......
It's not gonna be easy finding a flywheel for that 400. I know it wasnt easy for me. I got lucky and found a "new" reman flywheel for 80 bucks. I had to pay another 75 to get it CUT to balance with the 400. Best way to do it I think.. is give the machine shop a 400 flexplate or see if they got one... and ask them to balance the T5 flywheel like that flexplate. Oh and you can use the flywheel from certain year fbodies. 83 through 85 ONLY. It has to be a 12 3/4 inch diamater flywheel with 153 teeth. Oh... and you migh also need a new starter. One with a smaller nose cose that will fit the T5 bellhousing.
