help selecting cam

I have an 86 IROC with a TPI 305. I know that there is a whole lot of talk about cams on this site but to tell you the truth, I am confused about the whole thing. Right now this is my daily driver but some bad ETs at the local strip has got me going crazy to get this thing faster.

I heard that the 86's cams were toned down from the 85 causing a signifigant decrease in HP. So I figured this would be a good place to start to make up what was lost and add a little extra.

I have been considering a summit cam for TPIs(SUM-G5000). It says that they put one in an 86 with a chip and got 40HP. Has anyone out there tried this cam? Is there another cam that will give me more HP and work well with the computer?

I really don't have any other mods besides a highflow cat and flowmaster. I plan to install headers and a AFPR when I do the cam project.

If someone could please give me some advice on this I would greatly appreciate it.

I've told by some experts on here, that the Summit cams are based on 80's technology. With that said, Comp seems to make very high quality cams, I was recommended the Comp XE268 which I still need to buy.
Try to get a jegs catalog they have some info in there on selecting the right cam.
Though I would recommend getting headers first. As the exhaust is a big restriction on your motor, and without a free flowing exhaust a cam won't meet its full potential.

if this is a 5 speed the XE268 is a good choice

If we are talking an auto trans 305 (and your not changing rearend gears or adding a stall), I would go with the XE262 (or the XE256-12)

the 256-12 is ground on a 112lsa and the 262-14 is a 114. The 256 will most certainly make more midrange power and possibly not much less peak hp than the 262.

Right now I have 3.08 gears. I wasn't planning on changing the stall converter but If I need to, I will. That would be a good reason to put in a shift kit. My main concern is the computer accepting whatever cam I choose. A little bit of a rough idle wouldn't bother me, but I want to make sure that it is going to be streetable.

If I needed to change gears and stall to make this all work, what would you suggest?
