Cam Installation question

You don't have to drop the oil pan to get the timing cover off?

I don't think you HAVE to, but I took all the bolts loose on mine so I could pull it down 1/2". That little 1/2" gap buys you alot.

I know some have done it without dropping the pan at all but I didn't want to cut the inside lip off the timing cover.

When I put the cover back on I used a big glob of "The Right Stuff" rtv in the corners and it sealed up great. I also did a little around the studs at the corner too.

How well did your oil pan seal back up after you tightened the bolts?

Didn't have to on my old 305, I believe my brother used some RTV around it as well.

Doesn't the bottom of the timing cover catch on to the oil pan or is there a trick way to pull the timing cover from the oil pan?

In response to my own question. I think it is easy pulling th timing cover off but not so easy putting back because when compressing the bottom rubber seal to the oil pan i have heard that it is difficult to do so. Anyone have any insight to this matter?

Yeah, pulling it off was easy, putting it back on, my brother had a couple of choice words for this fu(cking piece of $hit 305. , but I guess he was happy he didn't have to pull the pan.

it was easy to pull the cover off but i had to loosen the oil pan to get it back on, used a 1/4" ratchet which fits in there pretty well with the engine in.

Hey Mark A Shields how did your brother Press that thing back in? I'd like to make my life a little easier ya know . I definetly do not want to pull down the pan cover because i really don't feel like having the headache of putting RTV sealant all around there especiall working from the bottom up. I'm really messy with that stuff.
