ATTN Mustang guys: question about Cobras
ok, i was planning to race this 96' Cobra about a week ago. i finally saw the car yesterday, but the owner was nowhere to be found. upon looking at it, i realized it said "Mustang" on the rear bumper and not "Cobra". doesnt that mean its a 94-95? and isnt it slower than its DOHC counterparts? so if it is a 5.0, what do you think it would run with cold air, bigger MAF, cat back exhaust, and 3.73 gears? you guys said mid-low 13s for the DOHC Cobra with these mods, but i think this kid is misinformed and its an 94-95. thanks in advance
94-95 Cobras will have the horizintal tailights, stock GT/V6 hood and 17" polished rims without the black inserts. The 96-97 Cobra will have the rims pictured below (which are on my car) which have the black inserts. 94-95's do not have this part of the rim blackened out

Look for the 13" front disks that will say COBRA on the caliper to see if it might be a real cobra or some type of fake.
Anyway, the 94-95 is 240HP, but it's slightly underrated. It had torque, unlike the DOHC models, so it wasn't a slug. They could run low 14's stock. Some light mods and a good driver and you have a high 13 sec car. Several members of www.corral.net have bolt on 94-95 Cobras running mid 13's. Those motors are 5.0's....easy and cheap to mod

I'd say low 14s high 13s if he can drive, those Stangs were heavy! I'm actually not sure on the Cobra, Mustang rear bumper, except that the Cobra guys have fits when someone gets it wrong! More than likely it's a GT! You should take him with the Vette!
'93 Cobra doesn't say anything on the bumper. Small COBRA badge on the hatch and different GFX and tailights and spoiler.
94-95 Says MUSTANG on the rear bumper and had stock GT hood and the rims i pictured above WITHOUT the black inserts
96-98 say COBRA on the rear bumper and have hood with two "nostrils" high up on them. 96-97 feature the rims i pictured above that are similar to the 94-95's but WITH black inserts. 98 cobras feature a modified Cobra R rim
99 say MUSTANG on the rear bumper
none made in 2000 except the R's and those said MUSTANG on the rear and did not have cutouts for the exhaust (used a V6 bumper)
2001's say COBRA on the rear
2003's will say COBRA and you will be able to hear the blower huffing away
:hail:
Oh yeah, all Cobras will have an SVT badge on the rear EXCEPT the '93 Cobra

So TPIvette, that means it's either a 5.0 Cobra or a 4.6 GT, either way I think you could take him!

I think you'd take him by about 2 - 3 lenghts through the 1/4. Like they said, it's a low to mid 14 second car bone stock and shouldn't have any problems getting into the 13's with those mods.
If its a 94-95 you shouldn't think that it will be a cake walk. They did have torque and with the 3.73s it will show! I test drove a 94 that had 3.73s and it made some mad get up and go power. Then again I don't know what else he had done because it had an aluminum drive shaft. But it was a damn strong 94 and I raced the poor bastard that bought it cause it was a POS inside the engine. He gave me a decent run up to 110mph.

well, i got a closer look today, and confirmed it IS a 96'. that means DOHC. so the race could go either way. what i have going for me, however, is the fact that hes an inexperienced driver. ive heard he grinds gears alot (hes learning to drive stick on this car), and because he generally doesnt know anything about Mustangs besides "Cobras are fast", he probably wont shift it at its 6500rpm redline to make any decent power. i left a note under his windshield wiper basically calling him out to race me tonight. so if he calls, its on

If he doesn't know how to drive then there is no way in hell he will beat you. The 4.6L 4v engines aren't made for the newbie driver. You have to know how to launch them right and if you don't take it up to ATLEAST 6 grand you can forget it. Walk all over him man! :hail:
