How can anybody think a stock 1.6ltr 4 is fast?
I was on my way to work last night (12hour night shift, 8pm to 8 am) and saw this brand new 2002 Cobra, i was in the passing lane when i saw it so i just slowed down a bit and checked it out as i went by (he was running about 10 under) and then got to my turn off. Well i noticed that he turned off with me so i was now running about 15 under to see if i could get him to pass so i could hear it crank up as he went by, but low and behold a black civic with a Grand Prix GTP front end comes around him and i can hear all 3 hampsters wheezing as he comes "flying" (not) up. So about the time he gets to my quarter panel i just lay into it. He of course hears this and trys to pass me but i just hold and before he really even got the hampsters cranked i was 10-12 lengths on him. I just want to know who in the hell told these people that a stock 90hp-120hp (depending on trim) stock 4cyl with about 3 ftlbs of torque, was fast? I mean i have had a 4cyl car and it was fun to crank the revs on and run around corners, but it was not fast and i knew it and never tried to act like it was. This is not to say a 4cyl can't be fast, they can especially with some nice mods, or with some great work from the factory (E30 BMW M3) but damn my mountain dew bottle has more displacment than these "fast and Furious" bone stock cars.
And yes i know my little 305 tbi isn't exactly fast either, but its better than that.

Because they grew up around slow cars. I mean come on if you have never been around fast cars, and get behind the wheel of a 5-speed anything, it will feel fast! I am lucky to be 17 and have grown up around fast cars. I know enough to know my car is slow, but has potential to go low 12s pretty easily. They think that power to weight ratio is all there is. That is great and partially true, but it is hard to extract power from a 4-cylinder motor not really designed to make big power! Some try with decent results, but most fail and end up hanging out at Taco Bell waiting to race another Civic!
P.S. there was no 202 Cobra, either it was a 2001 (nice car) or a 2003 (Vette killer)

No Kidding! What is it about imports and Taco Bell? That's the only place they hang out around me, and it's not just one Taco Bell there's a couple. I think we should have the Taco Bell ***** shoot out.

Here's something funny...
How about the fact that most of these high revvers don't know how to drive? Most of the vehicles around here can rev more than the LTD. Yet I hear them over beside me, switching to second while I'm still in 1st. Which is sad enough, since, excluding the initial jolt of low end torque, 1st gear on the Crown is not fast. At all. I think I need to replace some fuel system parts and oxygen sensors. And they always, without fail, when they actually wind high enough, catch second. How impressive. So you have better gears and you're still losing to a dinosaur.
I gotta say, I'm starting to get worried. I drive an 85 Crown Vic and a 93 Topaz and people hunt for me. I'll have a target on my *** when the Cutlass is going. I mean, it's bad, people. And I can only imagine what would happen if I had an F-body or Mustang...
Like when I was in Lewisburg not too long back...There was the group of teens in this Honda eyeing me as I rolled by. Later, I was on foot and they rolled by, sneering. Team DGF, they called themselves. Let me just add that to my list...
1)Extreme Customs labled vehicles.
2)New Era Performance

4)Redliners
5)assorted dumbasses with fart cans
6)Team DGF

Some people just dont know whats fast. I think 5.0mustang made a good point. Some of these people think hitting 15's is fast because the cars run 16-18's stock. Pretty slow!! hahah But hey not all of them are like that. I've raced alot of fast 4 cyl's in my 305tbi and lost. If they are modded correctly (usually includes a motor swap) they can really move. My SVO Stang will smoke my 305 tbi and prolly hang with my 350 tpi. Not bad for a 2.3T
The first car i learned to drive in was a '93 Volvo 940 turbo with a 2.3L turbo in it. It was my mom's car. I used to think it hauled...especially when boost kicked in.
My car when i was 16 was an '88HP 2.3L 4-banger 1990 Mustang. It was slow and i'd take my mom's car out now and then to satisfy my speed urge. To me at the time i thought the thing was fast!
Later on when i was 16, a friend got a 5.0 and i used to always rib him that my mom's Turbo Volvo could hang with him. He blew it off and i really did think it was just as fast.
I turn 17 and ditch the 2.3L for a 5.0 and finally feel real speed. Later on, i hop in the volvo and realize the car is a slug! It's quick...but wuldn't hang with a 5.0 for a second. I was almost embarassed to think i thought it could! I had the ***** mentality!
The Volvo was decent though, i'll give it that. I took it out here and there as a nice date car (full leather and nice stereo) and raced my buddy's new LHS with a V6 (same buddy who had the 5.0 i wanted to race). The little 4-banger turbo pulled hard on the V6 as soon as boost kicked in. Too bad we don't have that car anymore....love to crank the boost up...or toss a 302 in there!

try a CRX with a GSR or ITR swap into it....
not exactly fast but then again I wouldn't come close to calling it slow

I always thought my friends LX was the fastest car around, and I loved it. Well we went to the track for the first time this year and I went 14.4s all night, and he went 15.0, 14.9, 14.3, 14.8, 14.9!!! Now his car looks slow, and when I get my stick (THIS WEEK) I will be waxing the florr with the car I admired only 3 years ago!!!

Unfortunately, I am also one of those people that have never been in a fast car. But I do know that my car isn't fast. It's sad to say but my Trans am is the fastest car I have been in. I remember being in a turbo eclipse and thought that that was fast
but I was only 12 yrs old so I didn't know any better.
but I was only 12 yrs old so I didn't know any better. Fast is just relative to the people that you cruise with.
sure your 14.9 1/4 civic is fast if all you beat stop light to stop light are other slower civics.
your stock LS1 02' SS is fast if all you drive against are your friends with 4th gen V6s
that same SS is slow if you cruise with the big boys with modded Z06s, Vipers, 03' Cobras, Etc.......

relative?
Yes, it is relative and speaking of relative. I grew up with the 403 Cadillac. Not a really fast car, but it managed to burn everything that threw a challenge. However, speaking of relative...
I have a cousin with a 95 Tubo Mitsubishi Eclipse. He goes on and on about how fast it is. I'll wager that for a 4 cylinder, it is. Extremely. But these are his other vehicles:
198? Pontiac Gran Prix FWD, Quad 4, auto
1985 Chevy truck, 305, AOD, ?.?? Limited Slip
1977 Chevy truck, 327, ?????
19?? Dodge Caravan
198? Nissan Sentra 5 speed
2000 Altima
So far it is the fastest thing he has. So the point has been proven. But if he ever gets this going:
1965 Chevrolet truck, 350 4bolt, probably a semi radical cam, Holley 4bbl, headers, duals, and a low rear with a Rockcrusher 4 speed...
Maybe it'll change his opinion. There's more to that truck than I know,(just know it's fierce) but it looks pretty lightweight for a truck. And if it ever gets going, I'll tremble in my Cutlass.
