92 rs vs. 84 stang

well, i finally got to get some good driving in on the camaro i just bought, and i had some kid in probably about an 84 stang gt try to get me to race. i wanted to, but i was heading a different direction. it sounded like it was a 5 speed, and it had an exhuast, and k&n stickers on the side, but it looks completely stock other than that, it looked like it had been beat on a little.
who would have won?

i just got a 92 camaro rs 305 5spd, with a 160 stat, and a k&n, other than that i think the car is pretty stock.

The late model lx will whoop you the early 5.0 though may not be in the best of shape and as i remember they wern't the fastest of the fox body 5.0's so there may be a chance, but i am not a 5.0 guru so wait for someone like Nic to reply since he obviously has a bit more knowledge on the subject.

Provided that it is an 84 and doesn't have significant mods, I think you'd come out on top. Same with the 'vert. My old 'vert ran high 15's bone stock and took what seemed like an eternity to get into the 14's.

83-84 Mustang GT's(stick) have Holley 4 barrels and make like 175 hp. They're good for low 15's. It'll be a good race.

My friend has an 84 GT. Hes got intake, headers and true duals, a bunch of msd ****, dual friction clutch, its dropped has big brakes etc. etc. Those cars with the 5 speeds have 3.08s stock and that kills them. I've driven his car several times and it runs really good but it just can't get up and go with the 3.08s. I say if he doesn't have gears then you will take him. The late model LX will kill you though.

You sure low 15s? If so then your RS is toast.

Yeah...If I remember correctly, 15.3-15.6 range(I guess mid-low 15's). They're a lot lighter than the Camaro and put out a little more stock hp than the TBI.

I actually think those early carb gt's were a lot cooler than the later EFI ones.

Hopefully his carb will be out of tune!

i was figuring that it would be a close race with the old stang, hopefully i'll run into him the next time i drive the rs.
my friend w/ the 5.0 lx vert wants to race soon, im sure that i'll lose, but at least it will be a good race- his car might be out of tune, b/c i know it was acting up and losing vacuum.

btw, what did the lo3/t-5 rs run? i figured it would be right around 16 flat?

thanks for the help

I'd say the 84Gt would be high 15's low 16's. I owned an 84GT briefly as a parts car. It ran and was the stock 4-barrel with a 5-spd and had an updated 8.8 rear with 3.55's and still was a total dog. The car would barely screech the tires. Maybe it was because it was worn down a bit.

When we picked it up i let a friend drive my LX and i drove the '84. We fooled around a bit and my friend in my LX made it look like i wasn't even flooring it in the 84GT

Your 84 GT must have been out of tune. All times I've seen for those have them in the low-mid 15's. The 82 with 157 hp was a 16 flat car. The 85 was the fastest of the carb GT's with 210 hp. That ran high 14's.

If I seem to be rattling on about Mustangs, its because I owned two, a 79 pacecar and an 85 GT. Although, my interest in them ends there. I dont like the nose or the interior on the post 86 mustangs.

Maybe I overestimated the RS here. I think both races ought to be pretty close though. The '92 won't be as fast as everyone's expecting it to be I don't think.

the '84 was only about 180-190HP though...less on the CFI-equipped AOD cars. I'm sure mine wasn't too healthy as it was a parts car after all. After i got it home i gutted the hell out of it and parted it out and made about a grand profit on it.

84' stang

They don't run in the 15's maybe 15.9 if they're lucky. I know that L69 thirdgens in 84 absoulutely blew those stangs out of the water, providing they were 5 speed w/3.73's. And you'd be lucky to get low-mid 15's out of those cars stock.

And Rs 5-speed suck, because of the gearing, and they sure as hell don't run 16 flat. Maybe Mario andretti can pull those #'s

Dude..you're wrong..look at any old Motor Trend, Car& Driver, etc..
The times I quoted are correct. L69 5spds were also in the mid 15's. So neither car was "blowing eachother out of the water"

well, one of my first priorties, after i get the civic sold and the bodywork on the rs done, is to get gears and a posi rear end for it. i know the 3.08's aren't anything to brag about (better than the 2.73 auto like in my z, though) plus, i hate having a one-legged rear end- its cool to chirp 'em in third, but id rather have the extra traction.
so, if i had say a 3.73 posi rear, id have a better chance?

Track tests for the '84 GT's:

Car Craft: 15.83 @ 87.59
Hot Rod: 15.75 @ 87.19

Both models were convertibles.
