dumbsh*t thirdgen owner

A guy in my neighborhood has a basically stock 83 z28, as far as i can tell his only mod is polished aluminum 15's. Get this, he claims hes got a, and i quote, "early corvette SI motor." i told him si was a honda designation. he just laughed and said well see. i saw the hood open and took a peek one day. stock carbed 305, i believe the l69, along with an auto. should i embarrass him? my 89 l98 with full exhaust, intake, HOT cam, ported LTR's, ported heads, etc etc. I think ill murder him. just to show him that his motor, while making about as much power as a four banger si, is still nothing special. on a darker note, i saw an 88 firebird with quad outlet upswept ***** exhaust tips, skyline gtr emblems, apc stickers, NOS stickers, and painted brakedrums. geez.

Don't even compare a 1.8 liter motor to an L69! Not even close. Of course if he said he had such a motor, I could see him losing a race to one. Humiliate him for being stupid.

My cousins neigbor claims to have a Datsun with an LS1 in it. It sounds believable until you realize the nicest vehicle they have is a few beat up old 70s Ford P/U and a 1987 Dodge Van! These people are rednecks and claim they have an LS1 they got for $350 and put it in the Datsun they got for free!!!

:nono: . In 83 the only way you could get the H.O. motor was with a 5 speed. So he's got a powerhouse LG4.

why what does a L69 run mid 15's?

and a stock 1.6-1.8 can run about mid 15's

nothing wrong with that

The L69 runs those times in a car that weights 3300+lbs. while the SI motors run those times in cars that are ~2500lbs, Big difference. If you put one of those in one of our cars it would be a dog. Try getting one of our cars moving off the line with no torque.

Think about this, all racers goal is to remove weight. So in actuality the imports have the right idea, now if they could only do it with American V8s!!! J/K RX7, that is why the rotaries can go so fast!!!

yeah econo box doesn't need all that muscle to pull around and overbloated car, plus with less weight comes other adv like better handling, braking, and gas milage

Would someone help me out here on the "better handling" comment? I don't have any issue with imports, other than my inherent moral issues....But your same comment has been made before by other fellow import patrons.

I have a stock '86 IROC that'll pull .87g on a skid pad. If I had stiffer poly bushings, I'd guess at least a .92g. Stock most Honda's and the like are a tad under .82g or so. I currently run 245/16 Goodyear Eagle HP's. This size is factory spec for my car..what size do most imports run stock?
My IROC is 17 years old- using MacPhearson style suspension, and I think it more than holds it's own handling wise compared to these Civics and the like- which of course is using newer engineering techniques.
FWD is for economy. 90% of all Jap imports were built for economy. Your exactly right in your statement: Your econo box doesn't need muscle to pull it around. Simply because thats all it is....an econo car. After all- if it had power and was RWD it would no longer be an econo car. This is the same reasoning I cannot figure out why everyone is into the Riceboy scene with these econo cars...if they want a sports car instead of a wanna' be car that looks and sounds dumb, they need to go get a RX-7 or a Supra e.t.c....I can't image trying to mod my 4 banger '93 Sunbird economy car.

Obviously the Camaro can't handle, I mean it's heavy after all! Civics are the true "Sports car of the new millenium" cause they're light and fwd! That's why they do so well in autox!! Oh wait, they don't and thirdgen camaros always dominate, oops...

WTF? Racing is totally different from street use. I never mentioned autocross. But if you want to bring it up, the 1LE was built for SCCA in it's day, but again that was 17 years ago. However, I'm not speaking of racing; hence my use of the word 'stock' in my last post. You can modify any car to do what you want to do with it.
Why would you want to take a 17 year old platform and race it againt modern cars employing modern engineering practices (depending on what sanction)? Doesn't that in itself explain why a thirdgen "doesn't dominate autox"??
Just because some people modified a Civic to run autocross doesn't negate the fact it's an economy car.
Bottom line- In street clothes, I still feel my 17 year old sports car can hold it's own compared to the economy race car wanna' be's (Ricers) of today.
By the way- to say "autocross" is a broad term....if you want to talk about the Civic and other imports "dominating" autox, state what sanction your talking about.

sorry roc, but inwo was joking when he said that civics dominate, hence the correction"oops camaros dominate" as they do, particularly in the 5.0 scca class. honda's arent competitive in any class they are pitted directly against thirdgens. rwd is really the best for autox, providing less understeer and the ability to throttle steer. just saying, inwo was using sarcasm. just so theres no bad blood.

Yea I was being sarcastic, and shame on you for thinking that an fwd civic is even in the same league as the thirdgen Camaro
Why FWD Sucks
This article talks of AWD but the theories presented apply to RWD as well.

most of the FWD cars I know of are pulling around the same numbers on the slolam as a z06 vette can. and the skidpad numbers might not be as high but they are not in the .82 range I wouldn´t say

most of them I have seen are around .86-.82 range

that is done with the softer susp, and skinny little tires. most of yours are what 235´s or so and they run on maybe 195-205 at most

also think about how most of them are setup for economy and a nice plush ride rather then being a sports coupe (correct term for a f-body)

I think think of how you guys go about bashing all these cars b/c they are FWD (ever watch the touring car racing? fwd acura integras more then hold there own against BMW who have more power behind them), or b/c they lack torque, or who knows what else maybej ust b/c they are a honda.

some of you yeah give respect but I think they can be made to run quite well with a little tweaking to gte rid of th eecobox ride that honda or whatever import manufac made into the ride

and just checking on things the honda civic SI for 2001 runs a .85 on the skidpad and on the top of my head the slolam is prolly around 62-63 mph

My sincere apologies Inwo. Actually after re-reading my post, it seemed I came off harsher than I really even intended in the first place. 'WTF' is sorta an everyday word for me...Sarcasm is sometimes hard to pick up on from people in forums, or with any printed text for that matter...but I actually thought you were holding a Civic @ a higher standard than it's really at in it's point in production. By the way, thanks for the article....
