Value of a Buck

Okay....Here is the situation. Last year, before my wife and I bought our 85 T/A LB9, we were looking at an 87 IROC L98. The price on the IROC was cheaper, but the T/A was much nicer. We were going to by the IROC but someone bought it before we could get the money togther. This year we were going to buy a daily driver car for me, as I am tired of trying to patch back together my 1982 Thunderbird. We were planning on getting something that would be better in the snow than the T/A, and get better gas milage, and that was going to come in the form of a 92 V6 RS with a 5-speed. This car is at the same dealer that had the IROC. Last saturday, we went up to look at the RS, and the IROC was back. They had to repossess it, and the kid that had it blew up the trans. They want $2000 for the IROC with a junkyard trans with 60K on it, or $1500 as is. The 92 RS has alot more miles (about 30K) but it is only $1500 as is. I need some opinions as to which one I should get. I want the IROC, but the RS makes more sense to get.

P.S. We will be keeping the T/A, just getting rid of my Thunderchicken.

Also

I forgot to mention we did run a CARFAX check on both, the RS came back as having a rebuilt title, and the IROC came back as only an Exceeds Mechanical Limits, but alot of owners.

Well, what kind of shape is the IROC in? If it's a repo and the RS has a rebuilt title... I agree with Nic keep looking. There are way better cars out there for that price.

Later, Garrett

Condition

Well, aside from the trans on the IROC it is in pretty good shape. I mean it could use a good buff job on the paint, the tires are in decent shape. The interior isn't bad, it's got 2 or 3 small tears on the upholstry(sp), and a cracked dash pad. And it needs a new hatch pull down motor. The RS has been rebuilt, but the ground effects are cracked, the interior is in worse shape, with alot more wear, and there is no stereo in it, and the face plate around where the stereo goes has been spray painted white. But both run good, and the clutch on the RS is nice feeling, although very stiff.

The thing is that I really enjoy driving the T/A, but it is supposed to be my wife's car, and I want one of my own. Neither one of these cars is very bad off, considering they are under the 2k mark. The trans on the IROC is the same thing that I would be doing, but it would cost me about as much to get done as they are going to do it for (replace with a junkyard unit).

If you need a fun daily driver that gets good fuel mileage, why not look into a turbo 4 cylinder? I just can't see spending that much for a 15 year old car in the condition that you're describing it to be in.

If I "had" to choose, I'd go with the Iroc. If not, keep looking. Your going to be taking a gamble with both cars no matter what.

what to get.

If you are looking for a vehicle to drive in the snow do not drive a camaro..lol. I owned a 92 rs in Alaska, 5-speed, v-8, blizzaks etc etc. When i made my way onto clear roads no biggie but when you get into a situation where there is some accumulation of snow lookout!!Do yourself a flavor and park that thing in the garage during the winter and drive a truck or something with "Ground clearance"!!! Just my 2 cents have a good one.

Winter driving

Well, when that snow storm came through KY, I was caught at work in the T/A with no preperation for the snow. I still made it home in one piece, but it took me a while, normally an hour commute anyway. It wasn't fun either, but I will be getting snow tires, and possibly some chains for those hairy situations, I.E. an inch of ice covered by 4 inches of snow, and some weight to drop over the drive wheels. But I have done it before.

If that is the only ride you have I understand that..been there done that. Just driving a camaro with a good amount of snow on the ground can be exciting to say the least......yep throw you some sandbags in there will help a touch....later.

Thanks for the opinions guys, when I finally do get around to getting my daily driver, I will take it to my mechanic to have them look it over first. Anyone got a good turbo 4 banger for sale cheap?

As much as I would like to say go with the IROC (see sig) I think you should keep looking. I got my IROC for $2700 and it still had the right tranny and had an almost new engine. Just bid your time and dont get anxious and you will find a better deal.

I agree

With horrible horrible experience, right after you buy a car the right car comes along, so I would hold out.

Or if you had the cash you could buy both and give the IROC a 5speed and new interior and dump all the carp in the RS and sell it or art it out.

but seriously keep looking for a good car, plus my experience is F-body's don't do so well in the snow?? or is it me?

PS great snow car Olds Custom cruiser 80-84
