this Crazy guy i know seems to think thatn his 97 GTP has 280HP with a new pcm, air filter, and trans cooler. but he insists that it still will not keep up with his dads stock 96 z28 with an LT1,he thinks his dads car has has upwards of 305hp stock , however isnt it true that an lt1 only has 275 stock? and isnt it also true that a 97 gtp advertised as 240 hp stock maybe a net figure and the car would actually dyno at about 190hp at the wheels? thanx alot

96's I believe had 285.
Also what other mods does the GTP have, a PCM change and air filter won't gain 40 some HP...
If he's truly pushing 280 he'll keep up

I can reply to this topic. My 88 GTA with 350 tpi and 3.27 posi's lost from a 40 roll to my friend's stock GTP. Those things are frickin quick with the superchargers on them. :hail: Mine is stock too except for a recent tune up and flowmaster muffler. From a stop Im sure I would win, but with the forced induction on those things, they haul *** top end. So I'd also he'll keep up if he has those mods. The GTP's respond amazingly to very slight mods. Stick a underdrive pulley on those things and they can run in the 13's no problem. They make one hell of a sleeper car! :hail: O BTW...I did have another person in my car too, but I'd still say his GTP is probably still faster from a roll. Later
The only GTP that came with 280 stock would be the new GTP, or that might be 260. They still are making more hp, the 2004 models.
There is no way that he picked up 40 hp from a pcm and air filter. The LT1 is good for low 14's stock. The average GTP runs low 15's. If he had upgraded s/c pulleys, chip, intake and exhaust he would be in the low 14's, could possibly hit high 13's, mids at worst. If all he has is a PCM and a filter, then the LT1 is going to take him by at least a car. He will take him even more from a roll because the aerodynamics of the GTP and the weight.
I think that GTP are quick, but they arent that fast. I raced one from a roll in my freinds TGP and I pulled a fender on him from 40-75, and I would have pulled more if we would have kept on going. There is only so far you can go with the GTP though. I think the fastest one I have heard of was 11's or 12's. I just think it is amusing that someone on the boards stated earlier that GM underrated the GTP in trq, and that they have more like 320 trq stock.

hmmm well my friend must have gotten a freak then from the factory. He has a 2000 GTP. From a 35 roll he can smoke the tires. I think that is pretty impressive myself for that car. I've read on this board somewhere that with only a pulley, someone has seen a GTP at the tracks go in the 13's. So I wouldnt underestimate these cars. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...&highlight=GTP There you go...there is one thread to look at where someone said his friend's stock 2000 GTP went 13.9 bone stock. But do a search for GTP on this message board, and you'll see alot of amazing things about these cars. I was one to trash talk my friend's car at first, but damn after riding in it and him beating my GTA from a roll, I'd say its got some ***** for a family car. I still think he would keep up. Do some research on these cars first before posting please. Sure if you beat one, that can say they might be slow. But how good of a driver was that? LOL...maybe it was even a chick drivin. hehe

What I'm trying to say is that I don't think you lost simply due to the hp difference of both cars.

very true...i was just trying to state that they are very power worthy cars. And they are pretty damn quick to say the least. With mods they are easy to put into LT1 territory.
I know more than the average person about GTP's. Notice all he has is a computer upgrade and an intake, no pulley upgrades. He will keep up with him, but the LT1 will take the GTP. Even if the GTP does take him off the line, the LT1 will take it on topend. The F-body were built with high speeds in mind. The GTP were not. If we are going by 1/4 miles, it might be close, but higher speeds the LT1 has a definate upperhand.
Notice the guy says the car was a factory freak, that is why it put out a 13.9 w/ pulleys. Is a factory freak like some LS1. I will give it that the GTP should be good for high 14s with a good driver and good condition. The AVERAGE GTP with pulleys, chip, intake, and exhaust should be in the low 14's, if not busting high 13s. Even a horrible driver could hit mid 14's with one.
I never said the GTP was slow. I said they were quick, but not fast. Depends on your opinion of fast. I think have lots of ***** for a family sedan, along with the Bonneville SSEi and the s/c Regal. I have raced a GTP from a roll in my freinds TGP(low 15 sec car); I raced a modded GTP back when I had my 85 IROC from a stop and a roll; also raced a stock GTP from a roll and stop with my IROC. I have seen them run, raced them, etc. I have a general idea of what they are capable.
FYI. I took the modded GTP by a car from a stop, and a little more than half a car from a 40 mph roll. I beat the stock GTP by more than 1 1/2 cars from a stop and by at least a car from a roll.

I've always had a lot of respect for the GTP's. I think they should put those GTP motors in the Grand Am GT's. That would shave a few pounds I believe. Or in a Sunfire
...but how FAST would that be!

I raced a buddy's GTP who was running a S/C pulley upgrade, ram air intake, programer, exhaust and pulley's with my 98 540i 6/speed, and I JUST BARELY pulled on him, and I was shifting like a mad man. He could punch it from probably 30 MPH and absolutley bark the **** out of the pilot sports he has running!!!!
It was easily a mid to low 13 second ride.
