lost to a b18 honda... poo.

A few nights ago my friend called me up saying there was a guy who wanted to race me, and that he had a b16 honda, so I head up there thinking it would be just another honda put in its place. So I get to wal mart and meet up with them. Its a blue 2000 honda, and we start talking, and it turns out it was a b18, not a b16... thanks a lot, steve. anyway, Its a 5 speed b18 with a few goodies, intake, exhaust, headers... pretty souped up. we line up on a straight old access road about 1/4 mile long, and decide to race to a sign about 2/3 of the way down. steve gets out and is the flagman. we go, and I get traction. Through 1st, I have him by a car, then I shift to second, and he pulls on me a little. by the time I hit third, were even, and as we pass the sign, hes 1/2 car in front. I lost, but Im not ashamed, he spent 4k on that engine, more than my whole car

I know I should have won... I have a few major flaws in my car tho...

2.73 gears
stock 5.0 exh. manifolds
sluggish transmission
****ty heads

A+A is some ****ty generic pep-boys in PA. I only spent 1700 on the car tho, with the new engine, and am souping it up as fast as I can. In a few weeks Im buying a transgo kit and edelbrock TES system, then Ill give him another run

I hope you don't mean ALL hondas. A modified F20C would take it for a ride.

DOnt underestimate a honda with those b16s or 18s, a few around here are running low 12s and one with a built motor and turbo running mid 11s.

Dont underestimated b18 and b16 hondas my a$$ , those things are so slow its ridiculous. Sure I have seen some running some good times , but think about how much you have to put into them to get them there , and the cars dont even look good . Oh and hey you said headers dont you mean header ( not plural because its a 4 banger).

b16 I think has 160 hp and the b18 is a gsr motor with 170? I am pretty sure with the b16 but not with the b18. The hondas you need to watch out for are the civic hatches with the h22 prelude motor in them. Almost 200 hp in a 2200 pound car!

Yeah, and the prelude engines have about 200 lb/ft of torque.

I can tell you exactly what they will do. My brother's good friend has a B16 engine swapped into his crx with cams, intake, exhaust, just about everything you can do to it and he runs 14.6's with slicks. He took it to the dyno last week and put down 160 something to the wheels and that is with dyno tuning.

Car: too many ...
I've raced against B16's and B18's and I've ridden in cars with B16's and B18's. From my experiences racing against them, its not much of a race unless they're boosted. The only time they have a chance is at freeway speeds (power/weight ratio) with forced induction. From a stop? Not even close (4-5 car lengths by the time I hit 2nd). From my experiences racing in cars with B16's and B18's they were fun but still not that fast unless they push boost. It was mostly fun because they rev so high it sounds like a real racecar (first freeway pass was 8300rpm, next pass was 8700 rpm, etc etc).

Remember that a B16 puts out 160hp @ the crank and bolt on gains are minimal (because of small displacement). Putting 160 to the wheels with boltons sounds about right. But his 1/4 times do seem a bit slow.

I have a buddy with a b16 in his civic. It's a nice reving car. I swear he never drops the tach under 4000 anywhere he goes buzzing around town.

his times seem high for a b16 powered CRX. and for one running slicks even more so

granted the motor only puts out 160hp at the crank stock

and bolt ons don't give as much of a boost as a v8 motor

but generally if you put cams (unless very mild cams), intake, exhuast, and such most CRX's are least into the 13's with a b16

or maybe I am thinking b18a

I donno

either way though I would think a crx even with a b16a stock motor though should be I would think low 14's

CRX is very very very light at about 1900-2100lbs or so depending on trim

and at 2000lbs
160hp at the crank comes out to about 12.5hp per lb
while the a 245hp motor at 34000lbs
about like a thirdgen l98 only makes around 13.8hp/lb

Actually, I was wrong. I just talked to my brother and he put down 160 something before dyno tuning and after he made 179 whp. He is running MT slicks on 14 inch rims and ran a best of 14.67 on a 1.9 60 foot. He does have cams, exhaust, intake, and a few other things. He also has some type of special 5 speed tranny that he said he runs at like 4,000 something rpm on the highway with. I think he said he made peak power at like 7,800 rpm if i remember correctly. The engine is a B16. Not bad for a little 4 banger.
