1988 IROC-Z vs. 1978 Corvette

There's this idiot at work that just bought a 1978 Vette with extremely low miles and in real nice shape. Anyway, he was shootin his mouth off about how quick his car is and I told him we'd set up a fair race. Obviously he thinks he's goin to win but I want your guy's opinions. His Vette is bone stock except a shift kit and "free-flow exhaust" as he calls it; and I'm pretty sure it's the L48 which IIRC only makes 180hp and 260tq (Im sure there's some Vette guys out there that could verify my numbers) and I've got a 88 IROC-Z hardtop LB9 G92 with no factory options (not even A/C) and I trapped 92mph bone stock. All I've done since I've taken it to the track bone stock is swap the GM muffler for a Hooker catback.

I think I can beat him, what do you guys think?

I would have to say you will take him........ 88 TPI 305s are the year AFTER the peanut cam (thank goodness for you) and with that alone, you should take him.

I dont know , I think you have him. Even though if you think about it you have simular numbers and his car weighs less, But late 70's and early 80's vettes are dogs I knew a guy that had a stock 79 and his broke a 15.2 , so you should probably have him.

you're gonna put a hurting on him..I beat one of those vettes in my old 91 Lincoln Mark VII. Granted I was running high 14's in that car. Talk about embarassing though

if its the L48, youll kill him. badly.

however if he has the L82, it could close. a friend of mine had an 81' Vette (only had one engine availible that year, called L81 i think, with 195hp) and ran a 14.7 with only a open element filter and a flowmaster cat back. considering the L82 for 78' had 25hp on my friends car, and IF your friend can drive, it could be a very close race

Ah, no

Stock 305 TPI cams for 1985 to 1992. **Note the 350 TPI uses the 305 Manual Trany cams.

1985 Flat Tappet #14088843
Int/Exh 202/206 Lift .403/.415
1986 Flat Tappet #14094097
Int/Exh 178/194 Lift .350/.385
1987 Roller #14093643 Manual Trany
Int/Exh 202/207 Lift .404/.415
1987 Roller #14093640 LM1 Police Pack
Int/Exh 191/202 Lift .383/.404
1987-92 Roller #10088155 Auto Trany
Int/Exh 179/194 Lift .350/.384
1988-89 Roller #10066049 Manual Trany
Int/Exh 207/213 Lift .415/.430
1990-92 Roller #10111773 Manual Trany
Int/Exh 202/207 Lift .413/.428

The only reason he dont have a peanut cam is that he is a G92.

I would guess the Roc if your cars running good and he has the L48, but if he has the L82 I will guess him. There is a nice weight diference there.

My car's bone stock except the Hooker catback and before the catback I was trapping consistant 92mph trap speeds (times varied, lowest I got was 14.8). I mean I could delay the race and put on my cylinder heads and headers; I'm sure that would help solidify my win.

I just looked up some weight figures for the Vette and it's listed as 3500lbs curb.

I weighed my IROC-Z and it was 3205lbs with a 1/2 tank. (Remember it doesn't have any options-not even A/C)

Does anyone know any real world figures for 78-82 Vette weights? His has every option and I know curb weights dont show that.

His is 3 speed auto mine is of course a 5-speed manual.

he'll see your tailights if you don't sit there and roast the tires when you launch.

Buddy of mine has a 79 vette. I raced him with my old 110k lo3 with edelbrock TBI intake, open element, hooker headers (with the crappiest non-flowing y pipe ever made), and a crappy flowmaster catback. I also have a 2.73 open rear-end.

From a stop it was close because I spun and he didn't. But I won. From a roll I would put a hurting on him.

Those vettes are slow. I want to race him again but the car hasn't ran for almost a year....just because it needs battery cables.....

OK here is the other side. Now I'm not saying you'll lose but. My dad just got a 1976 Corvette with a stock 350 bottom end and stock heads, but had a different cam swapped in it, headers, custom 2 3/4" exhaust, and a shift kit in the tranny. Now I know that a lot different from stock but he ran a 14.5 in the 1/4.

So for refernce you should be able to take him if he is stock. So the '78 your going to race is the same as my dad's '76 except my dad has an aftermarket cam and headers.

So looks like you get the .

Good Luck, Garrett
