90' rs vs. 77' celica
i wanna race my 90 rs vs my friends 1977 celica gt. i have the tbi 305 and an auto he has the 20r and a 5 speed. i dont know much about his car except that it weights around 900lbs less then the camaro and he has a header and a straight pipe on his car. i got headers high flow cat and flomaster exhaust and a chip. he says he has 140 hp i dont know if this is true tho. i was just woundering what you think would win. i think i will beat him pretty badly.

I'd give it a shot. I assume the 20r is not the stock motor, because a normal 77 Celica GT is not exactly what anyone would call "fast" nowadays...

I don't know, I know the early 80's celicas had the 22r in them , and with the right mods, they could definitely be a force to be reckoned with, but if it's the 20r, then I probably wouldn't worry about it, but he does have somewhat of a weight advantage on you, but I still believe that you would be able to take him, so go ahead and race the kid and let us know what happens!!

oh me forking gonads this si funny stuff
I owned a 78 celica
the things are rated at about 88hp or something like tht if I remember right
maybe it was 105hp but I think it was around 88
they are slow
I mean 0-60 in 13 seconds slow
I wouldn't run the 1/4 mile in one cause by the time I get down the track it would be past my bed time
slow enough I lost to a geo metro in one
if you get bored look under my name for metro
you wil find the post
will say though
they are reliable

I got a 1977 Celica gt with the 20R motor, 2bbl carb, stock rebuild, not even exhaust. It has right around 100 hp so if he's stock with the header and exhaust than he's doesn't have 140 hp. He probably has around 115-120 if that. It shouldn't even be a close race. It sure is light body though.

sounds like a match for my old 2.3 liter mustang. it had a 5 speed and a glass pack muffler and says mustang on it...so that means its fast right?

I had a 20R with a 5-speed, 3.91s in a Corona wagon, I used to walk on smogger V8s quite often.
It had a header, Weber downdraft carb from a German Capri and a Crane cam (cheaper than a Toyota replacement when the stock one lost a lobe).
I raced a V6 5-spd Fiero and smoked him, and I was hauling a fridge in the back at the time! It was a rusty ol' sleeper.
If he just has a header & straightpipe you should be all over him.

Nah down drafts are used in alot of old european and such cars. You will see em on old triumps, bmws, ferrari's, astons, MGs, datsun 210's, 510s ect.

Import car guys love embarassing V8 car guys. Just run him and tell us how you make out. If he beats you, tell him you want a rematch and we'll help you kick his butt. I learned how to drive a stick on an '80 Celica when I was 16 and I could stay with my buddy's 305 '89 Camaro in a race.

i didnt think the celica had 140hp but now im sure. now i know i'd destroy him with my car, but the problem is it might be a few weeks before he can put his car on the road which is a problem because i have to take my car off the road. so it might come down to me racing him in my dad's 86 v6 do u still think i could take him in the sport coupe? if you guys dont think i could take him in my dads car i wanna rost him in my moms trailblazer

The Trailblazer have the 5 cylinder? Those engines are pretty sweet. I think they have more power than the 4.3 V-6 vortec
