"The Beast" vs 95 Turbo Eclipse

My friend and I are going to the track tomorrow to race and there is this guy we know that is going to be there that has a 95-up Turbo Eclipse that wants to run me in my 90. This guy can beat a modded turbo Civic SI->who can barely beat my friends 01 modded GT. I could take the GT pretty easily when I had the automatic in, but now with the T-5 I can't get traction cause I have no burnout cause I am scared to dump the clutch with the brakes on, and I don't want to bust up the T-5. Anyway I am trapping at like 109-110 now but that was with a stock clutch and shifter. Here are the mods I know he has:

Stage 2 turbo w side mount intercooler
intake turbo back exhaust cat back exhaust
pulleys, turbo boost controller, he is currently running 22 psi of boost.

His car is the FWD version with lightweight racing wheels and some good, soft rubber but not slicks.

I know he can take a stock C5 automatic from a roll, but then again so can I, it's a sticky issue, what are the predictions?

I think that if you get a good launch, everything will be you. But if you spin too much, he's got you.

BTW if the outcome leads to a loss, at least the car wasn't stock!

I have seen him race and he spins like crazy off the line. And yeah his car is far from stock it has about every thing you could do to it with out going into the motor or having spray. He claims to have close to 300 to the wheels but I don't know. He has all kinds of things that seem useless to me as a drag racer like bigger brakes, body kit, neons, shopping cart handle(aka aluminum wing), and suspension mods, it's like 2 inches off the ground it seems. It's a nicely done car at least.

FWD TSIs CANNOT hook for crap. they are only fast from a roll. if you can launch without spinning, you will win

You're going to win no problem. I stayed with one of those FWD Turbo Eclipses one night from 60 to 80 MPH until I let off because we were going into a turn. I tried to run him off the line, but he ran like an Import bitch. He even did the "***** Fly By" further up the road, but wouldn't run me off the line. Borrow some drag radials, rev your motor to 3000 RPM, let out the clutch and learn how to launch your car. It's only one race, if you break your T5 winning, it's OK. Do whatever it takes to win!!!

If he has an electronic two stage boost controller (profec-b) to help with his launch then he'd have an easier time hooking, however if he doesn't then he's toast.

My car has gone 12.8 at 107-108 ish with the consistant automatic and a 2.0 60 foot time. The best I had got on the T-5 was 13.0 but at 110 MPH with a 2.25 60 foot and a lot of wheelspin in every gear. Those T-5 times were with a stock clutch and the stock shifter and NO burnout. I am hoping with a burnout and the new clutch, and the hurst, I will get my 2.0 60 foot back and hopefully pull a 12.3 at 110 mph. I will not be powershifting to save the T-5.

BTW: He has the stock internals in his motor and claims them to be bulletproof from the factory.

Yeah it's all gonna come down to who gets the better launch, if you launch terribly, then sadly, i'd say he's gonna take you. Good luck, though!

Well I'd say it went well

I ran him and he had drag radials but he still spun real bad. He still clocked a 13.0. I managed to beat him though. I think I got the hang of the launch on my T-5. The heel toe burnout went great every time. The best 60 foot I could manage on my 255 BF goodrich street tires was 2.0-2.1. I ran a new best of 12.62 at 113.2 mph. I really am going to get drag radials cause I could only give it like 1/4 throttle and ease into the clutch or I would just smoke em and fishtail all dirty off the line. I tried both speed shifting and powershifting and they both yielded the same results in ET and MPH. The tires spun with each shift either way. I am hoping for low 12's with some traction. I did get beat by an LTI fourth gen by 2 cars that had these mods:
Stage 2 fully ported and polished heads
LT4 HOT cam w/1.6 RR
bigger TB with CAI
port matched LT4 intake
Hooker headers true dual 2.5 inch exhaust
12 bolt rear with strange axels
255/50 R16 drag radials
spec stage 3 clutch and T-56 w/4.11 gears in the rear
guy said his computer was tuned

No, it is totally a streetable car that I can drive to work everyday. It actually does fair on gas about 18.5 mpg. I really want traction but I can't afford to say goodbye to the T-5 yet. I did take some digitals at the track and some 35mm's so I will try to get them online soon.

*cough* forced induction *cough* no really though i didnt know that by just upping the boost on a turbo by a couple of pounds that you could yield a gain of almost 100 hp on some cars... that's pretty crazy.

Supra isn't a DSM and it's an inline 6.
As far as how... It's all about the design of the engine. 4G63 is a VERY well designed engine with a great head design and people regularly see 400+hp and 11s on the stock 6 bolt, easy 12s with the stock cams and unported head while retaining respectable fuel economy. The transmission is the weak point, but once that's taken care of you're home free. Very cheap and easy to mod if you know what you're doing and don't go out of your way to try to break it.
